Last Sunday, Mark invited me to help serve dinner at Tent City. A number of 1 had been set up for the homeless in the area.
My husband was not available to look after our two sons, so I took 9-year-old Tony and 5-year-old Toby with me. Many of the people we2 had missing teeth or wore dirty clothes. My sons had a lot of questions as what they saw challenged their 3 ideas about how people lived in the world.
"Why don't they buy food like us?" "Why don't they have homes?"…
We talked about the 4 why people ended up in that type of situation. And I mentioned the importance of creating a safety net for them, " Sometimes the safety net is other people who can share some of their time and resources(资源)," I 5.
I was worried that my boys would make too much noise. But to my 6, the people we served were quite thankful that I had brought them. Many said how fun it was to have 7 children around.
After dinner, I saw Tony sit together with several elderly men. He was 8 them talk about sports. To be honest, I had never realized that he was such a good listener. As some people returned to their tents, I heard Tony say to them, "Thanks so much for having dinner with us." I could see that his simple words had 9 them greatly. I hugged him a little tighter(更紧的)because what he said had touched me too. It was a great reminder that treating people with 10 can lift all of us up.

Be honest. That's all you have to do on Honesty Day. It would be great if we were all honest every day of the year. It's good that there is a day to encourage honesty. M. Hirsh Goldberg started Honesty Day. He chose the last day of April because the first day is April Fool's Day, which celebrates lies. On Honesty Day, anyone may ask you any question and you should give a true and honest answer. That means that you have knowledge of Honesty Day.
M. Hirsh Goldberg wrote a book on telling lies. He said in his book mat almost all person lie about 200 times a day. In our daily life, a typical(典型的)life for a man is "I did not drink that much" and for a woman is "Nothing is wrong I'm fine. " It is found that nurses are the most honest people, while sales people and politicians(政客)are the biggest liars.
Every Honesty Day, M. Hirsh Goldberg hands out prizes to honest people.
On a sunny morning, Andy rode to school slowly, day-dreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he didn't notice everything else around him.
He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked up to the sky. What he saw frightened him. A huge group of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and seemed to be flying angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy rode off in the opposite direction, but without knowing how to escape the bees. As the bees came closer, he was afraid. He knew that he was sensitive (敏感的) to bee stings (蜇). Last time a sting had put him in hospital. And that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to stay in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father's words came to him." When you are in danger, don't panic. Stay calm, use your brain and think your way out of it.”
On a nearby hill, he could see smoke rising slowly from the chimney (烟囱) of the Nelson family home "Bees don' t like smoke," he thought. "They couldn't get into the house." Andy raced towards the Nelson's house, but the bees were coming very close. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He thought that the bees would catch up with him soon.
Suddenly, he saw a small pool at the corner. He got off his bike and jumped into the cool water, disappeared below the surface and kept away from the horrible insects. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. He got out of the water and struggled (挣扎) up to ring the doorbell. Mr Nelson took him inside and rang his mother…
I wish there would be a way to describe China in a simple word but that's impossible.
▲ In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents.
▲I teach in Xiangyang, a beautiful city which the Hanjiang River goes across it and I live here better. The foods are cheaper than those in the US, so are clothing and articles(物品) of everyday us. People pay less for the public transportation, too.
▲ However, it is reported that still there are a few children who can't afford the expenses(费用) of schooling. But the government organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school.
▲I seldom saw the things mentioned of the creative(有创造力的) changes China has made. But the economic miracles(经济奇迹) have the big problems.
▲ To be honest, if I compare China with the US, my answer has always been the same: “We are not worse or better than each other; we are only different. ”
A. It's a tradition to value education in China. B. I realize that family is everything in China. C. I am often asked which country I consider better. D. I was used to reading the news of China in the US. E. The cost of living here isn't as high as that in the US. |

Now lots of parents will buy everything that their children want to have. If they the habit, their children won't know the money hard work. Some parents like to hold birthday parties for their children. If they keep on doing this, their children will think it is necessary for them to enjoy birthday parties every year. Year after year, maybe they will forget their parents' birthdays and only remember their own. It is against traditional habits.
Many parents don't let the children do housework. They think children have only one thing to do. They should study hard and their lessons. If parents go on doing this, the children will only learn to open their mouths to be fed and stretch out their arms to be dressed every day. When the children , they do nothing and they won't even find a job. Parents should teach the children how to do housework because it can help them start good habits of working by themselves.
Usually, a family has parents and children. But the structure varies in different (culture).
In many Asian countries, extended families (大家庭) are common. Families usually have three generations (live) together. When parents are busy with work, grandparents help do the housework and take care the children.
While in most (west) countries, many people prefer a nuclear family (核心家庭): families only parents and children. During the daytime, working parents send their children grandparents' house or daycare centres. And after work, they take the children back home. Some families are even (describe) as DINK—double income, no kids. According to 2010 Pew Research report, one in five (America) couples don't want a child.
Although families may (different) in the East and West, every family is a warm place to teach us important values of love and care.
