    Sing the language you're learning

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.

Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.

"Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way," said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulties learning foreign languages. In his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, "A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area."

Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D. C. , depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, "I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics(歌词). So it's easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for the kids."

"Sometimes, I think if I were taught English in that way, maybe I would speak much better English than now," Hua Zhuying adds.

Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you're still struggling in learning a language, why not try singing it out?

    1. (1) According to the passage, the best way to remember a foreign language is to_________.
A . read and write more B . listen to the teacher carefully C . copy the words many times D . remember words in a song
    2. (2) The underlined word "catchy" in the third paragraph probably means "_________" in Chinese.
      A . 艰涩难懂的 B . 悦耳易记的 C . 枯燥乏味的 D . 震耳欲聋的
    3. (3) Dr. Ludke believes that foreign language learning can be supported by_________.
A . using the listen-and-repeat singing method B . listening to all kinds of famous music C . writing songs with the language D . reading the lyrics again and again
    4. (4) From the passage,we know that Hua Zhuying _________.
A . is interested in writing English songs B . teaches children English by using music C . teaches Chinese in an American school D . is a researcher in a language school
    5. (5) The passage mainly tells us that_________.
A . many researchers realize the importance of language studying B . your brain remembers a language better if you sing it C . many language teachers know the value of famous music D . you will never learn a language well unless you can sing it

I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can't learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I'm good at it. I'm very glad to tell you something about how I study English.

First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject-English. It was fresh to me. I became interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! Since then, I have been learning English harder and harder. Our English teacher often taught us English songs, and the songs sounded nice. I often think how interesting English is!

Second, English is another language different from our Chinese. We should learn it in the following ways: Listen to the teacher carefully in class, speak bravely, read aloud and have a larger and larger vocabulary, and then practice again and again. And I have a good habit: whenever I have a question, I must make it clear by asking our English teacher. How happy I am when I understand it!

Besides, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So, to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.

And I also do some exercises in our workbooks, and I keep English diaries. English has become a close friend of mine.

Now I have learned English for more than two years. I am always in the first place in our class. Of course, I hope every classmate of mine can learn English well, too.

    1. (1) Why do some students often have a headache when studying English?
A . Because they often catch a cold. B . Because it's often very cold. C . Because they think English is easy. D . Because they don't think English is easy.
    2. (2) The writer tells us that we should be ______ in English if we want to learn it well.
      A . excited B . interested C . quiet D . happy
    3. (3) The sentence "I got a very good mark" means          .
      A . I got a good way B . I had a good idea C . I did badly in the exam D . I did well in the exam
    4. (4) The writer thinks English is interesting because         .
A . English is full of stories B . English is full of jokes C . his teacher often teaches the students nice English songs in class D . of nothing
    5. (5) Which of the following is NOT the way the writer studies?
      A . Speaking bravely. B . Writing to foreign friends. C . Reading aloud. D . Keeping English diaries.

Though he was born l,600 meters above sea level, he didn't climb any serious mountains until he was 29.

But Mr. Purja was trained to be strong. He used to be a soldier in the British army, where he had special training for fighting in very cold weather.

There are only l4 mountains in the world that are higher than 8,000 metres. Mr. Purja had already climbed several of them.  The old record for climbing the 14 mountains was seven years, ten months and six days. It was set by South Korean climber Kim Chang-ho in 2013.

Have you found that on grey, rainy days, your mood level is usually lower than on bright, sunny days? Is this a coincidence (巧合), or is there any science behind this?

According to a recent study, there is a connection ①____ weather and moods. Going to a warm place in winter can make our moods better. Pleasant weather has been proven to improve moods and memory. However, extremely hot weather can actually make us feel more tired and bored.

The best temperature for humans is about 22. 2 ℃. That explains why people in southern California are happy all the time. ②To improve his or her moods, a person must spend at least 30 minutes outside in warm, sunny weather. Spending time indoors when the weather outside is nice tends to lower moods. It can also make inside activities seem boring.

Maybe only the activities connected with being outside affect our moods. Warm weather is connected with the beach, fun outdoor sports and so on. It ③____ back childhood memories of playing outside all day. Who doesn't love that?
