Polly Goodman, 82-year-old, was a rich old woman. Her husband was a businessman and left her a large fortune after his death, so she had no problems supporting herself. The only problem was that her son who was a doctor busy with his work seldom had time to visit her, leaving her living lonely.
One day, Polly was walking along the beach, like she did every evening near her seaside house, when she noticed a young boy and his little sister playing there. As she was passing by them, she heard their mother calling out to them. "Corey! Daisy! Be careful! Stay away from the water!"
Polly noticed their mother resting on a bench, appearing sick and tired. The dark circles under her eyes were quite obvious, and she coughed frequently. Polly always had a desire to have a chat with someone. So she walked carefully towards the mother with a kind smile on her face.
"Hi, I'm Polly. I live by the beach." Polly said.
The mother looked up at Polly, feeling a little surprised. The mother told Polly she was Lydia and had worked as a waitress. Lydia further said that she and her children had only recently moved to that location because her children had always wanted to see the ocean. Then Lydia stopped to cough heavily. After she calmed down, it seemed she wanted to say something, but stopped as if there was something difficult to tell. Polly did not follow up, saying goodbye and left.
When Polly went to the beach the next day, she saw the kids again, but this time their mother wasn't with them. She observed them playing by themselves until late in the evening before heading home. The third day came and again the two kids played at the seaside until late in the evening, still without their mother's company. Then the elder brother was about to lead the sister back home. Out of curiosity and care Polly decided to follow them to their house.

Polly took the mother to the hospital her son worked in.
At the age of 17, I formed a band with three classmates. After we won the first prize at our school's talent show, we decided to see if we could get some local performances. When we found out we'd gotten booked for a charitable event at a large hospital, we were excited. For two weeks, we practiced hard, getting together every day after school to sharpen our skills and learn enough songs to fill a one-hour show.
On the day of the concert, we showed up early to check out the stage. We set up and did a quick sound check, then went backstage to have a soda and rest. While we were back there, the hospital's entertainment director came over to talk to us.
"Okay, boys, I just want to fill you in on a couple of important details," she told us. "A lot of the people in the audience are suffering from severe physical or mental disabilities. Also, many of them are very old. Don't let that alarm you. They have very few chances to see live entertainment of any kind, so they enjoy any kind of musical talent. Just play your regular show, and you'll do fine." With that, she left, going to help the volunteers and staff that were assisting the patients to their seats.
Soon enough, it was show time. Everything was perfect, and we played probably the best show of our lives. We hardly missed a note on any of our songs. Unfortunately, we couldn't enjoy our performance. As each song finished, there was a short pause. This was the time when the audience would normally applaud. Now, we were getting nothing. Zero. The deafening silence only made us more determined to win the audience over. We tried harder. Loud songs, soft songs, it made no difference. After forty-five minutes, we decided to end our set early. Why bother finishing when no one was appreciating us anyway? We unplugged(拔去)our instruments and went backstage.

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden. It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. The birds sat on the trees and sang. One day the Giant came back after visiting his friend. When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden. "What are you doing here?" he cried in a very gruff(粗哑) voice, and the children ran away.
"My own garden is my own garden," said the Giant, "I will allow nobody to play in it but myself. " So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice board—INVADER WILL BE ACCUSED.
Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the Giant it was still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom.
The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, "so we will live here all the year round. " The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak(披风), and the Frost painted all the trees silver. "I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming," said the Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden.
The Spring never came, nor the Summer. It was always Winter there, and the Frost and the Snow danced about through the trees. One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be the King's musicians passing by. It was really only a little linnet(红雀) singing outside his window, but it was so long since he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be the most beautiful music in the world. "I believe the Spring has come at last," said the Giant and he jumped out of bed to have a look outside.

Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively. However, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his pasts: about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these solutions were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, "Tyler, why don't you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?" With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can't remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week's suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler's anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.

On the day of Tyler's return, I stood at the door awaiting him.
A spark of surprise flashed across his face.
I must admit, I haven't always liked animals. In fact, I distrusted them greatly while growing up, and I still fear the ones I don't know personally now. What set my beliefs in stone was being attacked-not once but many times, including the summer after second grade when I was bitten by a rabbit. Then, when I was nine and riding my dirt bike down the road, a large dog charged me and tried to bite my ankle. After all those negative experiences, there was one thing I knew for sure: all creatures, great and small, were no friends of mine.
After college in California, I returned to live the single life in Las Vega. Then I met Lisa. In no time at all, we fell in love, married and moved into a new house. Despite my avoidance of animals, Lisa had a dog called Bailey. Bailey didn't like me, but he tolerated my existence once he realized I wasn't going anywhere.
Things changed as spring came. We welcomed a new member of our family: our son Evan. I'd heard stories of animals' attacking babies before, so I always kept an eye on them. One evening I noticed Evan grabbed hold of the dog's tail. The irritated(被激怒的) dog paused and turned to look at his stuck tail, but then he waited patiently until being released. I relaxed a little. Still the stories I'd heard worries me.
Then my worst fear occurred when I sat on the sofa reading and my wife worked at the dining-room table paying the bills. I saw Evan crawl (爬行) across the family-room carpet as he made his way behind the sofa, then Bailey quietly entered the room and headed to where Evan stayed. I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard the dog start a fearful barking behind me.

Dave had loved basketball for as long as he could remember and he had never had a day without playing it. At primary school and junior high school he joined basketball clubs, attended training programs and watched basketball games, from which he learned the moves of the star players, wishing to play in a professional team like them and shine on the court.
Now as a senior high school student, however, his dream of becoming a professional player was dimming (变暗) because he was only of average height. He had to give up the hope of joining the school team. The guys on the school team were all tall boys who played matches and won honors for the school. They were like heroes. Dave watched them play and cheered them but he knew he would never be one of them.
Dave felt it a pity not to be tall enough, but this didn't stop him from pouring his passion into basketball. He just played for the love of the sport. He played in the school gym with other boys or by himself every day, even during holidays and weekends, when it was open for two hours in the morning. He enjoyed every minute on the court making every effort to play better.
It was one Saturday morning. Dave was playing in the gym by himself, as all the other boys were busy with other weekend affairs. Then he noticed a tall boy approaching. It was Lankas. Everybody knows him as captain of the school basketball team. "Hi, Lankas," Dave greeted him. " My name is Dave. " "Hi, Dave," Lankas replied as he got closer. " Nice to see you here. Do you need an opponent to play against?" Dave was shocked, frozen right there, unable to believe his ears but somehow, he answered, "Why not?"

Jack couldn't believe it when he saw them. The trainers (运动鞋) were on top of a cardboard box, next to a pile of rubbish bins. And they look really good and brand new. He peered inside the trainers and found they were just his size. Jack cried out, "Why would anyone throw them away?" Anna shrugged. Anna was his best friend, but Jack didn't expect her to understand. She knew that he liked running and she even helped by timing him when he ran around the park. But Jack didn't just like running—he was crazy about it.
He unzipped his school bag and put the trainers into his bag. "It's the Area Cross-Country Championships in two weeks," he said. "I'll never do well in my worn old trainers. These will give me a chance."
Anna nodded. She knew how important the Championships were to Jack. Five runners were selected from each school in the area. Jack hadn't been chosen, but then one of the runners had gone to hospital. So they picked Jack to be his replacement in the race. Jack knew he had no chance of beating Beadle, the best runner in the school. However, he would be happy if he just did okay in the race—he didn't want to let himself down.
Much to their surprise, something unusual happened when Jack put on the trainers. Usually Jack set out at a light jog at first when he practised running. But this time he reached top speed straight away. He didn't plan it—it just happened. It felt as if he was running on air. He zoomed round the park and kept picking up sped. In fact he just had to relax and the trainers did the running. However, Anna felt really upset. She knew no pair of normal trainers could make such a difference. Anna shook her head, "You shouldn't wear them in the race. It won't be YOU who wins, will it? Anyone could win if they wore those trainers." But Jack wouldn't listen. "I won't give them up. These trainers are my only chance to win that Championship. I don't need your help!" he shouted. With that he turned and ran off like a speeding train.

It was time for the big race and the organizer called the runners to the starting line.
I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, "You can do anything you want to do." My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock—always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship(实习资格) in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I'm new and they're new, so if I'm going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, "Good, Faye. That's exactly what you should do."
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. "I've heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o'clock on Monday or eleven o'clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?" I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, "What do you want?" He sounded furious but curious. "All I want is a chance to audition(试镜). I just want you to know my face. That's all I'm asking.
I didn't know whether I'd ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called. "Mr. Slaight wants to know if you'd like to come and audition for a new school life show." I immediately answered, "Sure!"

Finally came the day of my first public appearance on live TV with my parents at home watching.
When coming to this city for high school, I moved into the new house with my parents. We were very grateful to the owner for renting us this house at a cheap price. The house was really comfortable to live in. It was warm inside and full of life outside.
A tree in the front yard attracted my attention, and all I could confirm was that it was a fruit tree. My father thought it was a fig(无花果) tree, and sure enough, as the months went by, the tree grew huge leaves and finally bore the fruit—figs, the size of my fist. How wonderful they were! I took many pictures of the fig tree. And then we wondered how to deal with the figs. My mother thought for a while and said, "Why not try making fig jam?" I responded quickly, "That's a good idea!"
Jack, one of our neighbors, just visited us and asked if he could pick some figs from our tree. Certainly, we encouraged him to take as many as he liked. In fact, Jack was extremely polite and friendly to us. He introduced himself at the first sight of us. He always waved to me as he came home or as he left for work.
When I picked the figs with him, he told me about how he had been living in the house next door for close to twenty years. He said, "Bruce, the owner of the house you live in now, used to be my best friend. And we had planted this very fig tree a few years before he went to the nursing home." I was amazed to know that we actually enjoyed the fruit of his work. He told me that he was so impressed by the quality of the fruit this year. I found a fruit box for him to put the figs in. Both of us enjoyed the pleasure of sharing.
When Jack set out for his home, I turned to my parents and advised doing something in return for Jack and Bruce's kindness and friendliness.

My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn't make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake's birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death ( 玩 够 了 ), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, "Did you have fun today, Jake?"
All my fault-finding son could say to me was "Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!" "Jake Marshall," I was clearly unable to contain my anger, "we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed?" Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son's daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn't satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.
