One day in class, the teacher held up an apple, stood in front of the class and said,"Please smell the smell in the air!"
One student raised his hand and answered,"I can smell it. It is the smell of an apple. "
The teacher stepped off the platform(平台),passed by each of the students and said,"Smell again to see if the smell of the apple is still in the air. "
Half of the students raised their bands to show that they could smell it. The teacher returned to the front of the classroom and asked again if the students could smell the apple. Everyone raised their hand except one student. The teacher came to the student and asked,"You really can't smell the apple?"
The student answered,"No,I can't smell it. I don't think it's a real apple. "
The teacher smiled at the student and said to the class,"He is right! This is not a real apple. "All of the other students had been tricked(played a joke on). They may have thought that perhaps the apple was not real, but they didn't have the self﹣confidence to speak up. They just "followed the leader" and went along with the first student.
①"A Love for Dilemma(《小舍得》),"a family TV play about three families' different attitudes(态度)toward children's education, leads to a popular discussion online these days. Nowadays, many parents still send their children to take various after﹣school training classes to learn different skills in order to make kids ready for every competition. Why are Chinese parents worried about their child's education? What is education for? What is good education?Readers share their opinions.
②I think sometimes Chinese parents transfer(传递) their own wishes to their children. Then, there is no end for their children to keep on learning. But parents need to understand that each child's talents are different from one another. Perhaps all parents need to know what their kids really good at and let them be what they want to be. ﹣ Justin
③I'm a student and I know my parents care about me a lot. It is the traditional thinking that they want to decide what's best for their children. In their opinion, they know more than their kids and kids should always listen to them. In fact, those kids lose the ability(能力)to make mistakes and learn from mistakes. Once they meet trouble in their future,it might be very hard for them to solve it by themselves. ﹣ Lisa
④Nowadays,lots of pupils go to extra classes after school. They often come home at 8 pm or later. And then they have to finish the homework from school. They look so tired every day. I think education should help develop their interests instead of taking away their happiness. The burden on their shoulders is now too much for their age. Parents should not push their children too hard and we should know that good grades aren't everything,▲ ﹣ Emma
Lamyah Jabbar first picked up Diane early one morning last week so she could go to work at Tim Hortons. As they were talking during the car ride,Diane mentioned that she had been looking forward to Christmas. She was hoping to receive a new pair of socks, house shoes, and a dress for the new year.
While these might not seem like an expensive shopping,Diane said that she did not have much money for herself. She used most of her money to help take care of her grandchildren. After Jabbar dropped Diane off at work, she stopped from picking up some more passengers,so she could head to Old Navy to do some shopping.
Jabbar then returned to Tim Hortons where Diane worked in New York,so she could surprise Diane with a new dress and a $50 Visa gift card for the shoes and socks. At first,Diane didn't know her,but then Jabbar reminded her of their conversation earlier that morning and handed Diane the dress.
Diane hugged her with tears in her eyes and said,"Oh!Thank you so much! This has been such a terrible day,but you've just made this day so much better!"
Jabbar later told CBS News that she offered to return to Tim Hortons later that day so she could give Diane a ride home for free. "I'm one of those people who are like, you can't tell me your problem and I can't move on without helping," she told the News Outlet.
Jabbar also said that she seldom talked about her good actions to others, and that she talked with the reporters only because she wanted more people to do something kind for a stranger.
