There is a lake in our city. In winter, it becomes a 1 outdoor skating area and many people go there. One day, Dad went past the lake and watched people skate. He2 how people could skate on the ice so easily.
He 3 skated by himself. He thought that he was too old and might 4 and get hurt. But that New Year's Day, Dad took the whole family to the lake. We helped 5 wear his skates. I showed him 6 to stand on the ice. Dad learned like a student, 7 listening to me. Watching him walk like a two-year-old child, I was happy and 8 . We had a 9 day on the lake, having fun watching Dad skate. At the end of the day, he could skate, but mostly on his left foot. He pushed himself forward with his right 10 .
From that day on, Dad went skating more often. At the very start, he could only11 on one foot. After a few weeks, he had become a 12 skater. Now, we spend a lot of 13 skating on the lake together. It's a fun memory for our family. We will14 it forever.
I learnt a lot from my father: 15 we have a problem, we shouldn't give up easily.

Once, a rabbit built a beautiful house, where he lived very happily. He built it so well that when a great rainstorm arrived, his house stood still.
However, the rainstorm destroyed(破坏) nearly the whole forest, and many animals lost their homes.
Soon, one after another, the homeless(无家可归的) animals came to his door, asking if they could spend that winter with him in his home. He invited each visitor in, and gradually the house was full, and finally there was no room left. Though it was crowded, the rabbit was quite happy. He enjoyed sharing his house with others.
In spring, all the animals returned to their own newly-built homes. One day the rabbit was playing happily outside. He did not realize that a lynx(山猫) was watching him nearby. One of the animals who had spent the winter in the rabbit's home saw this and warned(提醒) him just in time. And he shouted to the rabbit to come into his home.
The lynx destroyed that home, but the rabbit managed to escape(逃跑) and run to hide in the home of another friend. For a whole day. the lynx followed the rabbit from house to house, from cave to cave, but the rabbit always managed to save himself. He was helped all the time by the friends because they were all given help by him in the winter.
The rabbit felt very happy, not only because he had escaped the dangerous lynx, but also because he had made so many friends in the forest.
How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world?
The sun is probably the world's first "clock", except in the far north, where the Eskimos live. There, it's dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun as a clock. Even today, if you don't have a clock, you can still know that when the sun shines, it's day and when it's dark, it's night. The sun can also tell you if it's morning, noon, or afternoon.
People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.
Seamen on the ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.
In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the sand will take another hour to go back again.
Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another year in some ways. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.
In western countries, people usually celebrate New Year's Day from the midnight on December 31st to the morning of January 1st. People may go to the party, sometimes dressing in formal(正式的) clothes, and they may drink champagne (香槟) at midnight. During the first minute of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures like to celebrate the New Year's Day by walking up early to watch the sunshine better. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to say goodbye to bad luck at the beginning of the new year. For example, in Ecuador, families make a big doll and burn it to show the bad things from the past year are gone and the new year can start. There are also other common traditions that can keep away bad luck in the new year, such as throwing things into rivers or seas, or saying special things on the first day of the new year and so on.
People around the world think some new year traditions can bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year's Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck the person will have in the year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck on the New Year's Day. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck -- but to get good luck for a whole year you have to eat 365 of them.
