Many years ago, Mike Huss attended Ione Elementary School as a student. He went on to work there-first as a janitor (看门人) , then as a teacher, and now as a principal.
Huss said he never wanted to be an educator, but his seventh-grade teacher felt otherwise. "I remember Mrs. Collier telling me, ‘You will be such a great teacher someday,' and I laughed at her. It is not going to happen, but here Lam," he said.
Huss ended up starting as Ione Elementary School's janitor 30 years ago. He then spent 19 years there as a teacher and now is starting his first year as the school principal.
"I was really looking forward to teaching fifth grade again, and they reached out to me and said, ‘We think you're the leader the school needs.' "
Huss thinks his success comes from a push from family. He wanted to show his young son, who was 3 years old when Huss went back to school for teaching, that you can do anything you put your mind to.
Huss's co-worker Melanie Cortez was also once a student of the school. She said, "The kids aren't used to seeing him in the office, so we have kids come in all day long asking ‘Is Mr. Huss busy? We miss him so much!'"
For Huss, it's about the opportunity to change a child's life. "Believe in every child. I'm here to help them see themselves in a different light, because that's what people have done for me my whole life," he said. "I'm trying to help students believe in themselves that they can achieve great things if they just stay the course."
Many centuries ago, all people had to gather seeds and plants to eat. They did not know how to farm or raise animals for food. We call them the Stone Age people because they used stone tools and arms.
You may feel surprised in the world today there are still people who live like the Stone Age people. They live in the places that are hard to reach. Because they have met few people from the outside world, they rarely hear of modern inventions. They have not gained ways of doing things from others.
For 25, 000 years, groups of people have lived alone in the middle of Australia. One of thesegroups is the Arunta tribe (部落). They do not know how to farm and how to raise sheep or cattle.
The Aruntas spend most of their time searching for food and water. The men hunt animals with stone-tipped spears. The women and children look for roots, seeds and nuts. They use sticks to dig up the roots. Several Arunta families live together. They have no house. At night, they sleep around small fires.
Now other people are moving into the center of Australia. Soon the Aruntas will no longer be a Stone Age people. Maybe that's a piece of exciting news for them.
Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you've gained a few pounds? "That's normal, and it doesn't mean that your workouts are not effective", says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
"A person's scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs," he says. "Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you're gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it's probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is."
The scale can't tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts— by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don't get too excited— it's just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person's weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you're exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
Running with a group has numerous benefits, especially when running long distances. But group running also requires that you follow some basic etiquette (礼仪) and behavior rules. Here's advice on running etiquette for group running.
Leave your headphones at home. Sure, music helps push some runners along. However, it's antisocial (不爱交际的) to wear headphones during a group run. It can also be dangerous because listening to music means you'll be less aware of your surroundings.
Don't jingle (发出叮当声). , but you can bet that it will annoy at least one person in your group. You don't want to become known as "The Annoying Loose Change Guy".
Be prepared with what you need. . Carry your own water and food, as well as some cash or a credit card, just in case you need it.
Don't run without considering the safety of others. Not only is it rude to take over a path and block other runners, walkers, or cyclists, but it can be a potential safety risk. To make other runners and cyclists easily pass, make sure you're running no more than two abreast (并排) , especially on busy roads, sidewalks, or paths. such as running in a clockwise direction on a circular route.
. Runners join groups for the social element, but that doesn't mean they want to hear the same person talk non-stop about their running achievements, injuries, or life problems during every run.
Ask people, especially the new members of the group, questions to give them a chance to speak.
A. Be silent sometimes.
B. Show up early or on time for the start of runs.
C. Don't expect to rely on other runners for supplies.
D. Even if you know some group members very well.
E. Be aware of any special rules for running in parks or on paths.
F. Running with coins or keys in your pocket may not bother you.
G. Besides, you won't be able to hear instructions from other runners in your group.
