I was sitting on my mom's sofa and thinking of my hard life. Being out of work and short of money made my wife, our baby boy and me live with my parents. We slept in my old bedroom, and I was feeling upset.
Thankfully, I had one new job: helping my son learn how to walk. Anytime he took a few steps, however, he would fall down and cry. So I had to bend over (俯身) and hold his hand as he walked along. But my back wouldn't let me do that for long.
As I sat there with my eyes closed, I suddenly heard my mother say, "Joe, look!" I opened my eyes and watched my son catch the coffee table, pull (拉) himself up and smile. Next with a giggle, he started walking around it, keeping his hands on it for balance. Finally, when he reached the end of it, he took two big steps and made it to the wall. Then he started walking down the hall with his hands balancing on the wall the whole way. I laughed and cheered (欢呼).
Suddenly, I learned that losing the job wasn't so bad, for at least my boy had learned to walk. Trying to do something new is a lot like first learning to walk. We often fall and cry. However, as long as we try again and again, we will find our own feet and know how to do it. Don't be afraid to step out. Don't be afraid to fall!
One problem that most university students understand is not having enough money. Here are some money-saving tips for students we think will help.
Tip 1: Every month, make a list of your cost in a notebook. Write down what you spend money on, and when you spend it. Also, write down how much money you get each month. Doing this will help you make better decisions about when to spend and when not to spend.
Tip 2: If you have the time, getting a job is, of course, one of the best ways to make money. But even better is getting a job in a restaurant. Some restaurants give food to their workers, so you won't need to worry about paying for meals.
Tip 3: Buy secondhand textbooks whenever you can. When you buy them from another student, you won't even have to pay tax(税收). Many students sell lots of other things when they leave. Make sure to look around for lists of used things for sale at your university, and shop at secondhand stores if you can.
Tip 4: Eating in restaurants can be very expensive. You can save money by eating at home with family or by eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner with your roommates and sharing the cost.
Tip 5: You can spend less money on transportation if you buy a bus or train ticket. This can save you 30 percent or more. Cars cost lots of money, so if you live on the university campus, leave the car at your parents' home.
Ants have the ability to smell out cancerous cells(癌细胞)in humans, which has been found by a new study, suggesting that they could be used to find cancer in the future. Scientists from the French National Center for Scientific Research(CNRS)found that some ants have a good sense of smell. "But more tests must be carried out before they could be used in hospitals," the team said.
The scientists did tests with 36 ants, smelling cells in the lab. First, they let the ants smell some cancerous human cells. Every time the ants smelt cancerous cells, they were rewarded with sugar solution(糖液). In the second step, the ants were put into two different smells. One was a new smell of healthy cells and the second was still the smell of the cancerous cells. Once the ants found the cancerous cells successfully, the researchers made them smell different cancerous cells. As such, the scientists found that ants could tell between cancerous and healthy cells and between two cancerous cells.
This isn't the first time that scientists have used the animals' sense of smell to find cancerous cells. "Dogs are good at finding something with their noses. However, training dogs to do so needs several months to a year. On the other hand, ants can be easily raised in a short time, they are inexpensive, and hundreds of them can be trained with fewer times." scientists pointed out.
"This study shows that ants are able to learn very quickly. The way can be used for other tasks including finding danger or other illnesses," scientists added.
①They are cheaper.
②They are easier to be raised.
③They are better at finding things.
④They can be trained more quickly.
⑤They have a sharper sense of smell.
In winter and spring, the flu is a kind of serious illness. In fact, it is hard for you to stay away from it. However, there are some ways to cut down the possibility of catching it.
According to a study, the immune system (免疫系统) in the body doesn't work well in the cold weather, while viruses (病毒) don't like the warm body. So wearing enough clothes may help keep away from them.
Although it's possible for you to keep away from another's coughing, you're more likely to pick up viruses from something you touch. "Wash hands often. If there is no way to clean hands, try not to touch your eyes or nose," said Dr. Walton. "This is a common way for viruses to get into your body."
When you're sleeping, your body is able to produce something to fight with viruses. People who sleep for seven to eight hours will have a stronger immune system than those who sleep less. According to Dr. Walton, if you can't get enough sleep during the night, a 30-minute daytime nap (打盹) is enough to make up for the bad effect of the poor nighttime sleep on the immune system.
Taking enough exercise can keep the immune system working better. However, doing too much exercise may bring some bad results. For example, you may catch viruses more easily.
To keep away from the flu, having flu jabs is necessary and important. "It's true that the jab can't protect us against all kinds of flu, but it can save lives. I'm sure to have one every year," says Dr. Walton.
A. Get the flu jabs in time B. Take control of the body C. Do enough exercise to keep strong D. Keep your hands clean at any time E. Put on enough clothes to keep warm F. Have enough sleep every day. |

She found her classmates (like) rock and pop music. Maria asked them, "Why not listen to classical music? Classical music is pretty pleasant." They all looked at her strangely.
"Classical music is old people," one of her classmates said. Maria felt worried thought that something was wrong with herself. She told her father about it.
"Dad, am I strange?"
"Of course not," her father answered. " do you ask that?" "Because my hobby is different from my (classmate). They enjoy pop music. I like classical music."
"Never mind, Maria. It's important (have) your own things. You don't have to learn what others do. Everybody should have his or her own things. Some of (they) are popular, but others aren't.
After hearing that, Maria felt (good) about herself.
