Right now, the four travelers are about halfway through their2 . Ms. Smith says they are trying to see as much of the world as they can.
Mr. Smith says the family has ridden on ostriches, elephants and camels. But he says, one of the most3 experiences of the trip: s meeting new people.
"People are very4 and welcoming. They love our kids. And it's wonderful to see them enjoying themselves in their countries."
Eleven-year-old Tyler says he has enjoyed5 the people they have met. "I have learned in Africa that people have very different lifestyles from those in America." His sister Kan says that she likes Thai food.
Ms. Smith says that the trip is6 the children a lot more than short visits. "I think that the travel influences the kids7 on how they see the world. I can see them changing more than they can see themselves, she said.
It took the family a year to prepare for the trip. They had to sell their house and cars. Ms. Smith quits her job and her husband is using unpaid leave(休假). They carry small bags8 lightweight clothing and whatever else they need. Ms. Smith says she enjoys being able to carry everything she needs on her back

When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father's friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie's place. We'd sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we'd bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart-the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father's idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie's wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never he free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don't take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life's small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I'd learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.
Well, I've relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.
Most of us probably live without vegetables, but a world without chocolate? Now that would be hard! According to chocolate makers, it could happen if we don't act soon.
There are two main causes of the chocolate shortage-chocolate's growing popularity and less production of cocoa, the plant from which chocolate is made. With more and more people in India and China loving chocolate, not much can be done about the first cause.
Therefore, the only thing we can do is to increase cocoa production. However, new plant diseases and little rain in Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world's largest producers, have reduced cocoa production by 40 percent in the past 10 years. What's worse, many cocoa farmers in Africa and other cocoa-producing countries like Indonesia and Venezuela are changing to easier-to-grow crops such as corn or rubber. This way, the farmers can make more money.
To prevent more farmers from changing, researchers at the newly opened International Cocoa Control Centre, in the UK, are trying to create new cocoa plants that are stronger and faster growing. But first they must make sure the new plants are safe to grow. This takes a long time.
First, each new plant is stored at the Control Centre for six months to make sure it is healthy. It is then planted in the center's fields, studied and tested for another two years. Only after scientists are certain that they' re disease-free, will the plants be sent to farmers in West Africa or wherever else they are needed.
To create new stronger types of cocoa, scientists at the Centre are combining the best parts from different cocoa plants. Though the world is facing a serious chocolate shortage, there is now hope!
A. It's a kind of promise. B. Maybe there are good reasons for this. C. There are different kinds of resolutions. D. This helps us to remember our resolutions. E. How about you-will you make any next year? F. Without resolutions, success is impossible. |
We all love to make resolutions at the beginning of the New Year. Do you know what a resolution is? We always make promises to other people, also, to ourselves. We even write down cur resolutions and plans for the coming year.
As a student, we always promise our parents that we will study hard to get better results in the new year. So we promise ourselves we must find more time to study. We also say we are going to take up a hobby like painting or playing ping-pong, or learn to play the guitar. To get high grades in P. E., we must run every day.
Although we can make so many resolutions, we hardly ever keep them. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes we just forget about them.
But we must know that making resolutions is the key to doing everything well. So, once we have made up our minds, we must not be afraid of difficult problems and keep on doing so.
