Steve found a job on a farm. He's the strongest and youngest. He ate most, sleeps most, but worked 1. He hated to use his 2 and knew little. He had to do some unskilled(无技巧的) work. He always said he's tired and hoped to have a 3 rest. So he 4 less money than his workmates.
Winter came. The workers were told to get ready 5 the next year. Only Steve did 6. The farmer told him to cut down some trees in the forest. The young man went there with a chair. He felt lonely in the forest and was afraid of the 7. During his work, he looked around and sang 8, and nobody knew what he was singing.
Three days passed. Steve didn't cut down any trees. The farmer felt strange. He decided 9 to find out how the young man was doing there. To his surprise, Steve was cutting a tree, sitting on a chair.
"Why are you 10 here to cut the tree?" asked the farmer angrily.
"Because I can't work if lying down sir!"
Dogsare friends of man. They work for us. They hunt with us. They also play withus. But a long time ago, all over the world, dogs werewild. Dogs can goback to the Stone Age. All dogs had the same ancestor (祖先). It is believed that this ancestor was much like a wolf. Otheranimals, like fox, also came from this ancestor. Thousands of years ago, manbegan to tame (驯服) the wild dogs. When the dogs weretamed, they were trained well. The strong dogs then became working animals. They were trained to pull heavy loads. They learned to keep watching over sheepand other animals. Working dogs could do other things too. Some dogs were notstrong. But they could help man hunt. Other dogs were best at being pets. Atfirst, there were only a few kinds of dogs. Today, there are more than 100 kinds.
Can trees talk? Yes—but not in words. Scientists have reasons to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree (柳树) attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them tasteless so that the caterpillars got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. And the tree sent out a special vapor—a signal causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make themselves taste also terrible too.
Talking, of course, doesn't need to be always in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn't trees have ways of sending messages?
Many animals around us are smart. Let's get to know some of them.
Dolphins are smart animals in the sea. Researchers put sea animals to a test. Many sea animals either ran away or fought with the ones in the mirror. However, when the dolphins saw themselves in the mirror, they tried to clean the red marks off their bodies.
Bees work hard, and they are smart enough to learn something. If they could find the higher line, they would get sugar as a prize. After training for a period of time, the researchers tested the bees. Instead, when the researchers showed them vertical lines (垂直线) , the bees simply flew away, because they knew there was no way to get sugar.
Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) are very human-like. Researchers showed the numbers from one to nine on the screen. Chimpanzees and some college students were asked to remember where the numbers were after watching the numbers in less than a second. The adult chimpanzees and the college students performed almost the same, but the young chimpanzees performed much better. It was amazing.
A. They can learn fast and well. B. In the test, the researchers made red marks on the animals' bodies and took them in front of a mirror. C. So the researchers believed that the dolphins knew the ones in the mirror were just themselves. D. To their surprise, the bees found the higher horizontal line quickly and got sugar. E. Researchers found a group of bees and taught them to tell which horizontal line (水平线) was higher than the other. |
