Hard Is the Road of the World
Pure wine in golden cup costs ten thousand coins, good!
Choice dish in a jade plate is worth as much, nice food!
Pushing aside my cup and chopsticks, I can't eat;
Drawing my sword and looking round, I hear my heart beat.
I can't cross Yellow River: ice has stopped its flow;
I can't climb Mount Taihang: the sky is blind with snow.
I poise a fishing pole with ease on the green stream.
Or set sail for the sun and like the sage in a dream.
Hard is the way. Hard is the way.
Don't go astray! Whither today?
A time will come to ride the wind and cl eave the waves;
I'll set my cloud-like sail to cross the sea which raves.
The writer of this poem is highly honored with the title "The Poetic Genius (诗仙)". This poem expresses the writer's anger to the life; at the same time, it shows his positive attitude to making the dream come true, too.
No one was born to be good at languages. However, there are people who learn languages well. Here is some of what good language learners do. It may help you learn more easily.
Don't be afraid to take risks.
A Dutch friend of mine speaks English, Spanish, German, and of course, Dutch. I asked her what she thought was the most important in learning a language. She answered immediately, "Courage." They know that with every mistake, they get a small victory toward improving their language.
When learning something new, do you like talking about it or thinking about it? Or do you get new information in pictures or words? These are just some questions that help you discover how you can learn best.
Be actively involved in (参与) learning.
They know practice is very important and are willing to take risks and appear foolish if necessary. They don't expect to learn English only by sitting in the classroom but look for creative ways to try out what they have learned.
Learning a language means learning the culture where it is spoken as well. Good language learners learn the customs of the important values of the culture. They learn how to act in society. For example, they learn that "How are you?" is just a greeting in English, not a real question.
A. Be good cultural learners. B. Act as locals do when in different cultures. C. Find a learning method that suits them. D. Good language learners create more chances to use the language. E. Good language learners face the fear of making mistakes. F. Help language learners learn much better in language learning. |
Red, yellow, orange... in autumn, green leaves turn into many different colors. How does it happen?
Inside a leaf, there are little colored "bags". The green bags are chlorophyll (叶绿素). The yellow ones are xanthophyll (叶黄素). The orange ones are carotene (胡萝卜素). In summer, chlorophyll is busy. It makes food for the trees. It gets sunshine to turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar. There is more chlorophyll than other things in the leaves. So the leaves are green. In autumn, days are shorter and leaves get less sunshine. So leaves need less chlorophyll. The other colors, such as yellow and orange, come out. In all, the leaves don't really "turn" yellow or red. They just lose their green.
How do we see colors?
We see colors because of light. Sunlight has seven colors inside. For example, you are wearing a red T-shirt. The light hits your T-shirt. Then the T-shirt sends back the red light and takes in the other colors of light. The red light then goes into your eyes. A black shirt is black because it takes in all the light. And a white shirt is white because it sends back all the light.
How do plants and animals use colors?
Call for friends: Bees visit flowers and take away pollen to make honey. And in this way, there will be more new flowers. They use their colors to call bees for help.
Talk to each other: Some animals have strong colors. They look dangerous to others. Chameleons (变色龙) can change colors to show how they feel.
Hide away: Some animals may look like things around them. Then they can go near their "food" and other animals can't see them.
