Once upon a time, there lived a teacher in a small town. He often taught his students in special ways. His students said they respected him deeply, because they had a wonderful teacher. Once he sent four of his students to go to a small farm to see apple trees in different seasons. The first student went in winter, the second in spring. The third in summer. And the fourth in autumn

After the four students came back a year later, the teacher called them together. They pictured their feelings to the teacher. The first student said that there were no leaves on the trees. It made him very unhappy. It was boring. The second student said his eyes were full of light green. It made him feel hopeful. He wanted to do something new when he saw that. The third one disagreed, "What are you talking about? How pretty the trees were! The sweet smell of the beautiful flowers spread here and there." The last one shook his head .He said, "I didn't see the beautiful flowers, but I saw a lot of big apples on the trees."

The teacher smiled and told his students none of them were wrong. They each just saw one season. He continued, "The trees are not the same in different seasons. You can't judge a tree by only one season. Don't let the regret of one season destroy( 破坏) the beauty of the rest." What a good lesson the teacher taught them!

If music makes you smart and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into a person who is better at learning and understanding.

A team of scientists from Ohio State University did experiments on 33 volunteers. They found that persons who exercised while listening to Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons did much better in language ability tests than those without music.

The volunteers said they felt better after exercising with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to the music during exercise. "Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system (神经系统) and have a direct result on learning ability," said the psychologist ( 心 理 学 家 ) Charles Emery. Scientists have found that music can be good for health and education. It helps relieve stress, sadness and nervousness, encourages relaxation or sleep, wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.

Psychologists have been using Mozart's music, especially his violin pieces, to help children with speech problems. Mozart is chosen because his music is not over-exciting. The study shows students who often exercise to Mozart's music go on to score higher marks in tests. With important exams drawing near, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.

      A . Two B . There C . Four. D . Thirty-three
    2. (2) What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A . Students should not listen to music before exams. B . Children are supposed to follow their parents' words. C . Music may help student to get higher grades in tests. D . There is no reason for children to argue with parents.
    3. (3) Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A . Scientists often use Mozart's music for it is really exciting. B . Music usually makes people too excited to go to sleep. C . Exercising without music seems to cause many negative changes. D . Students can improve their studies greatly after exercising to music.
    4. (4) Which is the BEST title for this passage?
A . Scientists suggest great music. B . Music and exercise lead to stress. C . Exercising to music makes you smarter. D . Volunteers listened to Mozart's violin pieces.

We all know there is a problem with plastic (塑料) pollution. Five million plastic bags are used every year. One million plastic drinking bottles are bought every minute. What if we could use plastic waste to build roads? This is exactly what Toby McCartney has done.

In 2019, McCartney's UK-based company, MacRebur, built the world's first plastic road in Elgin town, Scotland. The plastic waste was made into grains (细粒) and then mixed with biturnen (沥青). The road looks just like any other road. But it has improved strength and is more stretchy (有弹性的) thanks to the plastic.

"Our technology can not only help solve the problem of plastic waste but also produce roads that deal better with changes in the weather," McCartney told the BBC.

McCartney's idea came from a trip to India. "I saw people in India would put plastic waste into stove and burn it. The plastic would melt down (熔化) and form a seal in the hole," said McCartney. "I knew that there must be some similarities between the plastic and biturnen, which both come from oil. That's how I started to think about mixing them," he said.

After lots of testing, McCartney found the perfect idea. Then the first road was built successfully. Now his company has built many plastic roads around the world, from Australia to Europe. A one-kilometer length of road uses about 684,000 plastic bottles or 1.8 million plastic bags. The road itself can be recycled in the end. The materials can be reused to build new roads.

"We're just a small part of ending the plastic problems, but it's nice to be part of it," McCartney said. "I just don't want my daughters to live in a world where there are more plastics in our oceans than fish."

    1. (1) The plastic road ____ according to the passage.
A . is much less stretchy B . will melt down in hot days C . can be recycled again D . looks different from other roads

      A . by mistake B . in a hurry C . through hard work D . with Indians

A . Road to Recycling B . Ways to Build Roads C . Materials to be Reused D . Problems to be Solved
    4. (4) Which of the following saying can best describe McCartney's work?
A . No sale, no kill. B . Small change, big difference. C . Practice makes perfect. D . Time and waves waits for no man.

English is spoken as the first language by most people in the USA, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada. However, English is spoken all over the world nowadays. It is the main language in over 60 countries including India, Singapore and many of the Caribbean and Pacific islands. In these places, English is often the second language.

English is also an international language in many other countries, like China and Japan. People in these countries use it for business, and travelers to these countries use English when they want to communicate. Other people may learn English because they enjoy reading books in English, listening to British or American music or watching American films.

English has changed a lot over the years and still goes on changing. It is no longer right to talk about British English or American English if the speakers come or don't come from those countries. People in Japan and Korea, for example may use the American spelling but may not sound like Americans.

English will probably be the most widely used language in the world by the end of the21st century. This language no longer belongs to British, American or Australian speakers

It belongs to anyone in the world. Therefore, as a middle school student today, think about how you can use this language .After you leave school, you will almost certainly need it.

    1. (1) In the USA, Britain and Australia, English is as their language.
    2. (2) English is spoken as an   by the people all over the world now.
    3. (3) English doesn't stay, it has changed a lot over the years.
    4. (4) the most widely used language will be  by the end of the 21st"century.
