—That's true. They want all their students to study hard and get good grades.
—For three years. We live in different cities, but we always keep in touch with each other.
—That's very kind of you.
From the childhood, Dave was always very kind and he shared what he had with people in need. After getting married, 1 Dave and his wife continued to share everything with others. Some years later, Dave ran out of 2 and even couldn't feed his family.
One day, when they cooked food, a poor man came and Dave 3 him food at once. And there was half of 4 left. After a while, a 5 farmer came for food. Dave offered him food as well. There was 6 some food left. Then a traveler appeared at Dave's door and asked for food for himself and his dog. Dave provided the food for 7 .
After eating the food, the traveler said, "I'm still hungry." So Dave gave the traveler the food which he had meant to eat himself. To his 8 , the man was actually very rich. He said, "I'm very pleased with your spirit and kindness, and Ill be glad to give you all what you want."
Dave 9 him and said, "May I always be able to share whatever I have with others?" The man 10 and gave him much money and enough food. Dave thinks helping others is sometimes helping himself.
In 2013, China started the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI, "一带一路"倡议) to connect the world. Now, the BRI is making a big difference.
Connecting countries Kairat Bekmurzayev from Kazakhstan grew up in a small town near China and his father worked in China. When Bekmurzayev was little, his exciting time was getting candies and new toys from China. Now, thanks to the BRI, Bekmurzayev can enjoy these things all the time. "The center helps make new houses and roads. That makes our life easier," said Bekmurzayev. |
Sharing culture Temelidi Yulia now studies at Tsinghua University. But the girl from Russia can watch many great performances from her country often thanks to the BRI. For example, in September, Russian artists performed The Nutcracker in Beijing. It's one of the classic ballets in Russia. "In this way, people in these two countries can understand each other's cultures," said Yulia. |
Making a better life Liu Runxi from China studied at Southwest Jiaotong University some years ago. Thanks to the BRI, many of her classmates got to work as engineers in countries taking part in it, for example, Africa and many Asian countries. They not only got high pay but also learned about different cultures. |
At the age of 16, Zhen Xin, from Beijing, finished the Five Great Mountains Challenge in August—in only five days. She became the youngest person to do it.
The Five Great Mountains Challenge is about climbing China's five greatest mountains Taishan Mountain in Shandong, Huashan Mountain in Shaanxi, Songshan Mountain in Henan, Hengshan Mountain in Shanxi, and Hengshan Mountain in Hunan—in 100 days.
Because of the hot weather in August. Zhen did most of her hiking at night. "When you can't see what's coming next, many of your fears and worries go away. You're less likely to back down," Zhen explained.
Zhen said the key to hiking was one's mentality (心态). Whenever she came across a vendor booth (货摊) along the hiking road, she would remind herself to carry on until the next one. And whenever she felt she was about to give up, she would reward herself with a drink or some snacks.
Of all the mountains she climbed, Huashan Mountain was regarded as her favorite because of its steeper trails (更陡峭的小径). "They're more dangerous than the other four mountains'," she said. But instead of making her afraid, the challenge improved her concentration (专注力).
However, Zhen said the most terrifying hike was climbing Taishan Mountain. It was so hard to move forward, "We could only move up one step every five minutes or so," she said.
Zhen decided to climb the five great mountains when she finished middle school, "I wanted something that would allow me to truly see my growth and changes over time. As I grow older, I want something to share with others," she said.
Do you know how people fish in winter? Here are the steps.
Step 1 Find the fish The leader of the fishermen needs to find the best fishing place. He lies down, and his ears touch the ice. This way, he can hear the fish. He has to listen carefully. If he makes a bad decision, they may get nothing that day. |
Step 2 Cut holes The fishermen cut hundreds of holes in the ice, making a circle. The ice can be 50 cm thick. The fishermen have to work very hard. At the same time, they must be careful not to fall into the lake. |
Step 3 Set the net Then they place a big net under the ice. The net goes along the holes and rounds up the fish. The fishermen push long hooks (钩子) into the holes and lead the net to make an enclosure (围场). |
Step 4 Pull in the net After 7—8 hours of hard work, they pull the net out of the water through a big hole. Inside it are hundreds of tons of fat fish. The horses come to help. They turn a big wheel. And the wheel is tied to the net. This way, they can pull the net out of water. The net has large holes. So, baby fish can get away. When they grow up, they can give birth to more fish. |
Have you ever thought about what's more important, looking fashionable or feeling comfortable? No matter what you choose, don't forget being fashionable isn't everything. It's more important to be healthy.
Some people believe that they need to be a certain size to look good. So, they start extreme diets that are not good for their health. They might not eat meals or eat too little, which can make them feel sick. Is it a healthy way to live?
Also, many girls wear shoes with very high heels. They might think high heels make them look taller. But these shoes can actually hurt their feet, make it hard to walk comfortably and increase risks of falls. Some even wear tight (紧的) clothes that influence blood circulation (循环), making it hard to breathe. Should we put fashion over comfort and physical health?
Besides, some boys and girls spend a lot of time and money changing their hair color. The material they use is usually harmful to their health. To make their hair straight or curly, they also use tools that are hot enough to burn their hair. But using these tools too often or at very high temperatures can make the hair dry or even burnt. Is it really worth it to risk our health, spending so much time and money?
So, let's rethink what's really important. Is it fashion or is it our well-being? Clothes or hairstyles don't tell us anything about a person's character. Instead of spending a lot of time choosing clothes, we could use that time to do fun things with friends. And instead of following extreme diets, let's eat properly and exercise regularly. Remember, your value is not decided by your appearance, but by who you are as a person.
A kind of beer made from ancient yeast (酵母) up to 5, 000 years old has been shown to the public by Israeli researchers. These researchers got six types of yeast from old pottery (陶器) discovered in the Holy Land. The beer is believed to be similar to the drinks enjoyed by the Pharaohs (法老) of ancient Egypt.
"I remember that when we first brought out the beer, we sat around the table and drank. And I said either we'll be good or we'll all be dead in five minutes," said Aren Maeir, an archaeologist from Bar-Ilan University. "We lived to tell the story."
In the past, beer was a basic thing—like bread—enjoyed by all the people in Israel. Since there was always a risk of water pollution, fermented (发酵的) beer and wine were considered much safer to drink.
Ronen Hazan and Michael Klutstein, two biologists at Hebrew University, came up with the idea of creating beer using old yeast. With the help of beer expert Itai Gutman, the team used modern techniques to create a drink similar to wheat beer.
"The greatest wonder here is that the yeast has lived for thousands of years—just waiting to be dug and grown," Dr. Hazan told reporters. "By the way, the beer isn't that bad."
The team says they hope to make more beer using ancient techniques instead in the future.
Once a young man was asked to paint a boat for a man. He got some paint and (brush) and began to paint the boat. While painting, he discovered a tiny hole in the ship's hull (船体) and (quiet) fixed it. It was not the (one) time for him to do that. After work, the young man got paid and (leave).
The boat's owner showed up at the young man's house the next day a large check (支票).
"You've already given (I) money for painting the boat, sir." said the surprised young man. "This isn't for the paint job, it's for repairing hole," said the man.
"But it was such little service." said the young man.
"I forgot the hole when I asked you to paint the boat. you finished painting it, my kids took the boat and went on a fishing trip. Then, suddenly I remembered the hole and tried to contact my kids, but I couldn't reach them. I was scared to death. Imagine how (thank) I was when I saw them return home safety. After that, I checked the boat carefully and discovered that you had repaired the hole." said the man.
No matter what, where, when or how, try to help others. Because sometimes, even the (small) action of kindness may be of great help to others.
