Nina is reading a book which described 37 endangered natural and cultural treasures in the world. The writers want the book to be a hopeful call to action. Here are some examples of these places.
Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro in northeastern Tanzania, is the highest point in Africa, measuring almost 6,000 meters. The mountain supports 5 plant areas and many kinds of animals. The ice glaciers (冰川) on the mountain are disappearing very quickly. This will have a bad effect on the mountain's ecosystems(生态系统) and on Tanzania's travel industry. Also, a valuable record of thousands of years of weather history will also be lost if the ice melts.
Glacier National Park
In the United States, the icy blocks in Glacier National Park may soon completely disappear because of the weather change. In 1850, there were about 150 glaciers. By comparison, there are 26 glaciers remaining today. Scientists estimate that the glaciers will be gone by 2030. Warm temperatures are also threatening the many kinds of plants and animals that live in this mountain ecosystem.
Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest coral reef(珊瑚礁)system in the world. Rising sea temperatures are greatly harming the reef. In some areas, healthy yellow, brown and green reefs have become white. The coral whitens when it is in warmer temperature. Sick or dying coral affects the whole ecosystem of this special underwater area, Water pollution and visits by careless swimmers and divers also threaten the reef.
While walking outside one morning, I saw the most beautiful thing.
It was early, and I was walking on dewy (带露水的)grass down to the office. Suddenly a flash came out straight from the ground, about 15 feet in front of me, and shot up into the sky. I stopped. What could make such a bright light? Could it be a diamond (钻石)? I waited to see if it would repeat, but it didn't.
I walked slowly toward it, but saw nothing. I looked down at the grass, searching for gold or some kind of metal, again, nothing. Dropped down to my knees for closer look. Suddenly, I saw it. The rising sun hit the grass dewdrop (露珠)at the perfect way, sending great light into the sky. It was as if I had just discovered a tiny new world and it was just the unseen world that was giving me a heads-up (提醒), ""Hello, look at what's around you," it said. I've never forgotten that moment.
So next time you're out, take some time to notice nature, whose beauty most of us never even see. Look at the beautiful colors and different small flowers that cover playing fields, we walk all over them without a second look. Watch a bee dancing, or tiny ants going on their way, or birds singing in the sky. All of these natural living things are amazing if only we took the time to notice them.
Have an eye for nature, and you'll find a new secret each day to keep in your heart. It's one of the most wonderful things I've ever done.
Last week my husband and I took a trip to visit friends and go skiing. During my time as a pilot, I had (fly) over these huge mountains many times. However, until last week, I never visited (they) at ground level.
The (one) day we went skiing, so we drove into the mountain. Soon we followed the roads to the ski places. There we parked our car. I put my skis (滑雪服) and went ahead to the lift.
As I rode the lift even (high) up the mountain, I watched the people below move along the snow. At the top of the lift everything along the (side) of mountains was so amazing and beautiful. I was standing on the mountain top, which was circled by more snow-covered mountains—it seemed that I had moved into postcard. I took a moment to reflect on the (nature) beauty around me. It was valuable, not strong, and easily broken.
Now, I'm back home (think) about the things which I experienced on that mountain top. It reminds me h important the environment protecting is! Protecting our environment will make people be able to experience the same beauty in the future. So let's take action together to lead to a better future.
How much do you know about Antarctica(南极洲)? Antarctica is the coldest, windiest emptiest place in the world. There is little rain all year round and it is one of the world's (dry) places. It is also home to penguins and (difference) sea life along its coast. Cold weather over millions of years has made it very icy. In some places, the ice is about 1.9km thick.
Humans (explore) Antarctica for many years. It is said that the first man to reach Antarctica was John Davis, US seal hunter. After that, thousands of tourists visit the coast of Antarctica during the summer is from November to February. They get there (see) penguins, seals, whales and icy view.
Do you know who lives and works in Antarctica? They are (most) scientists and their assistants. The Polar Programmes in the US support the study of Antarctica. It sends more than 100 scientists to Antarctica each year. In Antarctica, some scientists study the (move) of glaciers(冰川) and the activity of volcanoes(火山). Other scientists study animals, whales, seals, birds and fish.
