All over the world, people have all kinds of friends. Dogs are people's honest friends. Cats, elephants, camels, horses, cows are people's helpful and useful friends. But do you think that computers are people's friends, too? Now let me tell you 1 about it.
We live in the “computer age”. People, like scientists, teachers, writers and even students, use computers to do 2 work. But more than 30 years ago, 3 couldn't do much work. They were very big and expensive. Very 4 people were interested in them and knew how to use them. Today computers are smaller and 5. And they can do a lot of work. Many people like to use them. 6 people have them at home.
Computers become very important because they can work 7 than men and make fewer mistakes. Computers can 8 people do a lot of work. Writers now use computers to write. Teachers use them to help teaching. Students use them 9 and children use them to play games. Computers can also remember what you put into them. Computers are very 10 and helpful. It is true that they are our good friends. Do you think so?
There would be a school party on Friday evening. The girls were talking about what they were going to wear.
"I'm going to wear a black dress, so everybody will notice me," said Emily. "How about you, Linda?"
"I'm not sure. Maybe jeans, an old shirt, and a hat. People will notice me more than you!" Linda said.
"But what are the boys going to do at the party?" asked Jane. "Do you remember the school party last year? They just stood there, and we girls had to dance by ourselves!"
"I hear that some of the boys learned how to dance this summer. Maybe it'll be better this time," said Mary.
The party was held on Friday evening, groups of students arrived. The music began. The girls stood in a line on one side, and the boys stood on the other side. Mr. Green, their teacher, tried to get them together, but failed. After a while, Tim said, "I don't want to stand here the whole time. The party is only for two hours. It'll be over soon." He started to dance. All the others watched him. Then David asked Emily if she wanted to dance. Then Jack and Linda. Then, all began to dance. Soon there were more dancers than watchers.
Today I went to Sam's school in the UK. It was really different from my school in China.
Girls wore grey skirts and white shirts, boys wore grey trousers, and everyone wore the school tie.
Some of Sam's lessons were a bit strange for me. We were reading Shakespeare in the English lesson, and there were quite some old words like "thou" and "thee" to mean "you". In history we studied 20th Century China. It was strange hearing a foreign side of history — and hearing English people trying to say all our Chinese names!
Classes were also a lot more relaxing than in China. Teachers were called "sir" or "miss", everyone shouted answers and raised their hands in classes. It was more like a debate than a class. A bell rang at the end of each lesson and everyone jumped up to go to the next class.
At break we bought potato chips and cookies in the dining room. Lunch was later than in China at 1 o'clock. We had big plates of pie with carrots. For dessert there was hot sweet rice called rice pudding.
It was good that I'd had an excellent lunch, because at Sam's school Monday afternoons are taken up with sports.
I played my first game of netball — a bit like basketball, but with some differences. Luckily I'd had a quick look in the rule book before I tried to join in the game.
There are many kinds of animals that live in the forest, such as mice, rabbits, squirrels, bears.
Animals in the forest depend on(依靠)one another for food. Many small forest animals, such as mice, eat green plants for food, and then larger animals eat them. This is called food chain. A food chain begins with the sun. The green plants in the forest use the sun's energy to make food for themselves. It's called photosynthesis(光合作用). Mice eat flowers and seeds that forest plants produce(生产).The mice get their energy from the plants, and the mice become food for a larger animal, such as the hunting hawk. So the energy from the sun passes from the plants to the mice to the hawk. A break(中断)in any part of this food chain means some animals may not have enough food to eat.
A 50-year-old American officer came back to his school. The teacher asked him to give a talk to the small boys and girls there. The talk was about the love of their great country. All the little ones were sitting in a large meeting room. The old officer went up and began speaking. He said, “Boys and girls, I studied in this school forty years ago. When I was your age, we were not as happy as you are today. Think about it and answer me. Why are you so happy now?”
No sound came from the children. The old man waited for a long time. Then a short boy in front put up his small dirty hand. “Good boy! Please answer me, dear.” said the officer.
With a big smile on his face, the boy stood up and said, “If you speak long enough, we won't have Maths and Biology lessons this morning.”
