Avery and I are good friends, but once something unhappy happened when we both tried out for roles in Alice in Wonderland.

What's All That Nonsense（荒谬）？

Edward Lear

Who was Edward Lear? He was a great English writer from the 1800s. He wrote many poems. His most famous book of poems is from 1846.

It is called A Book of Nonsense! Before you read this book, you should know two things.

Are Those Real Words?

Lear's writing is very creative because he made up words. But don't be surprised if you see them. They are just a lot of fun nonsense！ There are many different strange creatures（生物）and words in his stories. For example, there are Pobbles, Jumblies, and Blue Boss-Wosses in his book.But they are not real! Many people like his work because it's interesting and funny!

Lear's Poem Pattern（模式）

Lear wrote many of his poems in a special kind of pattern. His pattern has five lines. And he made it very popular! When you read his poems, look for the special pattern: the last words in the first two lines will rhyme. And in lines three and four, the last words will rhyme together. Then the last word in the final line will rhyme with the last words in the first two lines.

Seventh-grader Luna from Stillwater Public Schools in US, did something good for her community. She held a blanket drive（毛毯捐赠活动）in November， picking up blankets from different places and giving them to homeless organizations（组织）such as Pioneer Pantry.

"Since she is a Payne County team leader who likes doing community projects, and she tries to come up with one or two a year to do, this is the one that she decided she wanted to do this year," Luna's mother told Stillwater News.

To donate（捐赠）to Luna＇s community project， people could send blankets to a local county office or call her to come and pick the blankets up. There were 125 blankets donated to the Pioneer Pantry.

Luna chose to do a blanket drive because schools usually do coat drives while other organizations do mitten （手套） drives. A blanket is nice because it can help people stay warm at night, and it isn't as heavy as a coat, she told Stillwater News.

It is very important to Luna that she works for those in the Stillwater community who are around her age-because she sees their struggles（挣扎） firsthand. "At first， I couldn't think of a community project, then somebody said at school that they didn't have a blanket and they were not sure what to do, so I decided to do a blanket drive," Luna said.

She hopes that she can help keep the community warm this winter, as well as call on others to help people in need.

①Scientists have found that plants can make sounds.

②A scientist Lily Hadany and her team recorded（录制） tomato plants at different times. It showed that the plants made ultrasonic（超声波）sounds. People could only hear them with the help of a computer. They were noises like clicking sounds.

③As the scientists studied the sounds, they began to find some interesting facts. Plants made different sounds at different times. They seldom clicked（发出咔嗒声）when they had enough water，but when they needed water, they clicked more and more. Scientists also found that plants made sounds when they got hurt. When scientists cut off a leaf from the plants, the plants also clicked more. But the clicking wasn't the same as when the plants needed water.

④Some scientists designed a computer AI system to tell the different kinds of clicking sounds. It was able to find the difference between plants that needed water and plants with cuts. It means that one day we may be able to use these sounds to find out when it is in difficult time, and what problem it is having. That could be very helpful to farmers.

⑤The team's finding changes our ideas about plants. As Dr. Hadany says, "Even in a quiet field, there are sounds made by plants, and those sounds carry information and may help us a lot."

Sometimes you have to begin a different life in a new school. Maybe it is not easy to start a new school life,  .

In a new school, you may want to make new friends by changing yourself.   . 

Changing who you are for other people will only make you feel even worse. Be yourself, and soon

you will find friends who you like.

Accept invitations

In a new school, you may want to keep in touch with your old friends after school. But thatnever means you should stay away from your new friends.   . This can make you know them well.

Remember your new teachers are always there to help you. If you have any trouble, it's best to have a talk with them. They will be glad to listen to you.

Don't worry too much about moving to a new school.  . Very soon you'll have lots of friends and you'll have fun again.

Living in China for 25 years, China is still a desirable country that I always look forward to  (visit): This Women's Day holiday, I planned a one-day trip around Yangzhou. It was like love at first sight.the age of 15, I received a book that was a collection of poems of the Tang Dynasty. In it, I was deeply attracted to a poem written by Li Bai-"Sailing to Yangzhou in March when blossoms curl（卷曲）like smoke on＇the river".

Yangzhou, sitting for 2,500 years at the crossing of the Yangtze River and the 2,500-year-oldGrand Canal（大运河），is one of the 24（city） on the list of Historic and Cultural Cities in China. In the old town, there are many streets and houses. It is great (travel)to the city in spring. Spring paints the city in bright colors.

Yangzhou is famous for（it） gardens． Among them， the Slender West Lake（瘦西湖），one of the biggest attractions in the city， was my（one） stop． The park with its fantastic landscape（景色）and lots of history has enough to keep a tourist busy for the whole day. I felt sorryI could only have a half-day tour.

My next stop was He Garden, one of the best protected gardens in Yangzhou. It was once owned by the family of He Zhidao during the Qing Dynasty. He (bring)Chinese and Western architectural（建筑的）features together successfully.

Yangzhou is also the starting point of the Grand Canal tour. Taking a boat along that part of the canal in Yangzhou, I was (amaze) at the liveliness of this ancient waterway and the city's history and culture.

I found it (luck) to have a trip to Yangzhou filled with pleasure and wonder. It made me hungry for more of China.

In the past, children didn't have computer games to play, TVs to watch, or books to read. They spent a lot of timed  housework at home or studying in their classrooms, so they often created（创造）theiro  games. Most of them thought those games were the most important things to do.

One of the most p games was rolling the hoop（滚铁环）．Children took a big hoop and r    after each other with their hoops in a park. The one who could get to the finishing point most q   was the winner. It s    like an easy game, but in fact the hoop was quite difficult to roll.

A   fun game was nine pins（瓶柱）．Nine pins were placed three in a row．One person would wini   he knocked down all nine pins with a ball. Children also flew kites and h  themself to let others find. They were also interested in some adventure games, for example, s   for treasure in an old house. Sometimes the weather was bad, such as rainy or snowy, so children often read indoors.

Imagine you can have phone calls with your favorite star. Is it exciting？ AI humans （人）might help with it. Today, AI humans are popular at home and abroad.

As we all know, AI humans now can be like real people. They can do real people's voices and moves and even copy their personalities（性格）.But what else can they do？ And what can only be done by humans but not AI?

Digital humans today play the roles in many ways. They can be idols, vloggers, reporters, and more. For example, China Daily has its own digital reporter, Yuanxi. She can speak English and cover the wonderful world of Chinese culture. She can process（处理） data fast. This can help the newsroom work faster.

In 2022,Chinese tech company Baidu showed its first digital idol Xi Jiajia. She can change her make-up and how she dresses， and even do webcasts（直播）！During China Fashion Week， Xi Jiajia became famous in an online virtual fashion show（虚拟时装秀）."Virtual idols could do something that people cannot do in the real world, such as time travel," said Liu Qian from Baidu. Liu took the digital tour guides as an example. They can be in different places and from different times in history.

But AI humans have their disadvantages（劣势）. Take Yuanxi as an example. She still doesn't have much touch and EQ like us. These are something that only a real human can have. What's more, virtual people can't team up and communicate with others in real time.

As Yuanxi wrote, "Virtual employees show the power of AI but they are not a replacement for traditional human employees."
