One day, I picked up my daughter Lingling from school and went to the supermarket for a few things. I was hoping to be in and out quickly.
I found a short line with just one person in front of me. It was an old woman, and she was paying for her things with only coins (硬币). After a long day at work, I thought the woman was very terrible.
But then I watched a young salesman. He helped her count her coins, ever so kindly taking them from her shaking hands. He repeatedly said to her, "Yes, ma'am (女士). " When she asked if she had enough money to buy a bag, he told her she did. Then he walked over two lines and got one for her. This salesman wasn't angry at all. He was patient and kind.
As I was watching him, I saw Lingling was, too. I realized my daughter was learning an important lesson from a stranger.
When the woman was finished, the salesman began ringing up my things and thanked me for my patience (耐心). I thanked him, too. I found the manager and told him about the salesman's kindness and patience.
Then we left the supermarket with a full basket, but also with a heart full of thankfulness for such an important lesson.
Can you imagine an AI chatbot (聊天机器) competing with you in an examination? Do you think you could get higher scores than it? A new AI chatbot called ChatGPT recently passed a law school exam! Sounds crazy? The use of ChatGPT has raised heated discussions in the education world.
ChatGPT was developed by US company Open AI. It is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions. According to a US survey of more than 1000 students, over 89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with homework. Some schools in the US do not allow students to use it. For example, New York City public schools don't allow students and teachers to use ChatGPT on the district's networks (地区网络) and devices (设备).
The measure (措施) comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread incorrect information.
"It does not develop thinking ability and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for studying and lifelong success, " said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education. Except for bans (禁令), teachers are making changes to their classes to prevent the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.
However, not all educators say "no" to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are making rules on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far. Some people said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not wise. "We have to know that AI is a tool people will use, " What we need to do is "change our learning, teaching and examinations". In that way, we can "have integrity (诚信) while recognizing the use of the tool".
