One day, we were playing basketball after lunch. Abby was 1 distracted(分心) by her worries that she didn't even notice the ball hurtling towards her.
"Ow!" she cried as the ball2 her in the side of the face.
"I'm so sorry" said Luke. "I thought you saw it coming!"
"It's OK. My mouth is going to be hurting like crazy soon anyway. "
"How come?" Luke asked.
"I'm going to get braces next week, " Abby said. "I'm so worried. I can't think about3
"My dad has this trick that helps with worrying, " I said. "He has me name the specific things I'm 4 about. "
I continued, "So if you write down the things you worry about, maybe you can5
do something about them. I'll help you make a list. "
That afternoon, we made a very clear list of Abby's worries:
1. Braces will make me 6 strange.
2. Everyone will play 7 joke on me.
3. I will never be able to eat popcorn or sticky candies again.
4. Because of the braces, I'll spend 8 life in pain.
9 Abby's worries list wasn't exactly funny, we still decided to describe it with silly cartoon drawings, and we couldn't stop laughing.
Abby had the world's best idea. "How about10 my worry list into a survey? We can ask kids with braces 11 they've experienced the things on my list. "
The next day we did the survey, and everyone seemed 12 to take part in it.
Then we discovered that everyone agreed it 13 a few days to get used to their new look. Not being able to eat stuff that gets stuck in braces, but ice cream or ice pops can still 14 . Whatever, it's really not that big of a deal.
So try writing down your worries and talking to other people who have braces. Doing those things help you to feel 15 .
There are many interesting stories about Confucius and his students. Confucius is known as a famous educator all over the world as he provided the poor people with opportunities (机会) to be educated. He left many famous sayings, 1 he might also make mistakes.
Once Confucius and his students passed through the State of Chen and Cai on their way to the State of Chu. They were not 2 to continue heading for Chu, because the two states worried that Confucius might help the State of Chu become stronger. Confucius and his students didn't have any food for seven days and they were 3 .4 his student Yan Hui got some rice and cooked it. When the food was almost ready, Confucius saw Yan Hui taking out 5 from the pot. Later, when Yan Hui invited his teacher to have the meal, Confucius said, shouldn't it?Why did you taste the rice first?"
Yan Hui offered his 6 politely, "I am afraid I am misunderstood. When I saw some dirt fall into the pot, I tried to pick 7 the dirty rice and ate it up. "
Confucius sighed and said, "As an old saying goes, seeing is 8 , but it isn't always true. We can't 9 our eyes too much. I feel really 10 of my behaviour. "
"Amy!Milk!" Mama called.
Milk. It was Amy's turn to get it. Amy sighed and shut her first﹣aid(急救) book.
Amy tied the cow close to a tree. Somewhere down the mountain, some volunteer doctors were teaching medical skills to village nurses. Amy heard Betty drive off hours ago. "She should have taken me with her. She thinks I'm too young, " Amy thought. "But she's wrong. I am already 15!"
Amy carried the milk back to Mama, and then wandered up the road. Roy, a village boy, " Amy thought.
She had just turned away when she heard a heavy fall and a few cries. Roy was on the ground. "Roy!" The kids nearby ran towards him. "Get Betty, " one said. Amy shook her head. "Betty's gone to the city. "
The kids didn't know what to do. Amy ran to Roy and saw one of his legs out of shape. A broken leg!She remembered what the first﹣aid book said about it.
"Victor!" Amy called to one of the boys. "Go get Roy's mama, and find someone with a truck. " She turned to the others. "Give me your shirts. We need something to tie his leg with. "
Amy then found a strong, straight stick. She carefully wrapped the shirts around Roy's leg and the stick. Roy cried out in pain. "I know it hurts, " Amy said softly. "But this will hold it still until you get to the hospital. "
When Amy was done, she looked up and saw Roy's mama and a man watching beside a truck. "Thank you, Amy, and then they drove down the hillside towards the hospital.
The next day, Betty came to Amy's home. "I heard what you did, " Betty said. "You kept your head in an emergency. That's an important skill. "
Amy's face turned red. "I was afraid. . . "
Betty shook her head. "It's OK for a nurse to be afraid, as long as she has a clear head. The volunteer doctors are coming tomorrow with vaccines(疫苗). We need some more hands. Can you help?"
"I'd love to, " Amy replied at once.
"Come early, then. There is a lot to learn. " Amy smiled. "I'll bring my first﹣aid book. "
