When I was a young child, my parents often told me that it was time that taught a man everything. I didn't understand and wondered why 1 had such a big influence 2 a person. Over one billion tons of food is wasted each year. Take bread, one of the most wasted products, as an example. In France, tons of bread has to be thrown away each year because of a short shelf life. What should we do?
Six years ago, Franck Wallet thought up a solution. He created the Crumbler, a machine that turns old bread into fine crumbs (面包屑), which can be used to make bread. More than a hundred bakeries have begun using the machine. The resulting bread is darker than the white French bread that most customers are used to. Also, this kind of bread which is made from the Crumbler's crumbs lasts longer than the bread that is made from common flour.
People have come up with several other ways to reduce bread waste. For example, Toast Ale is a kind of popular beer that is made from wasted bread.
In the Netherlands, companies in several cities have used containers (容器) to collect unused bread. The bread that is collected is turned into natural gas or fertilizer (肥料). This practice reduces food waste and also cuts off a food source for mice.

The Northern Lights appear as beautiful colors in the night sky. The most common color of the Northern Lights is green. However, they can also be red, pink, yellow, or purple.
What causes the Northern Lights? Like all the natural light on the earth, they come from the sun. Sometimes, the sun has big storms and gives off electrically charged particles (带电粒子). When the electrically charged particles reach the earth, some of them pass through to the air around our planet. They then collide (碰撞) with the gases (气体) around the earth, which causes beautiful lights with colors.
The colors of the Northern Lights have to do with the height. For example, when electrically charged particles collide with gases less than 150 miles from the earth's surface, they produce green light. When the collision happens higher than 150 miles, they make red light.
Over time, many people have tried to explain the Northern Lights. Some cultures have ancient stories about them. Today, however, we know the science behind the Northern Lights, and people travel thousands of miles each year hoping to see them. Many say it's a magical experience!
With bad news about global warming, dying oceans, and endangered animals, it's hard to know where to start. Actually there are many ways you can help.
Save water at home. If you live in an area with a water shortage, this is even more important for the environment.

Papermaking technology (造纸术) is one of the four great inventions in ancient China. Before papermaking technology was invented, the Chinese carved or wrote words on tortoise shells (龟甲)、animal bones (骨头), bamboo slices, wooden plates, and silk. Tortoise shells, animal bones and wooden plates were too heavy to use while silk was too expensive. In the early years of the Western Han Dynasty, someone used ramie (苎麻) to produce paper, which was very rough (粗糙的) and not suitable for writing.
In the Eastern Han Dynasty, an official named Cai Lun created a sheet of paper using mulberry (桑树) and other fibers along with fishing net, old clothes, ramie, and other waste. He steamed and cooked all those materials with water, and changed them into pulp (纸浆), then poured the pulp out carefully on a fine screen and dried it into a kind of thin paper. The paper was suitable for writing and was also very cheap so it became very popular. Therefore, Cai Lun played a great part in papermaking technology.
After the Eastern Han Dynasty, papermaking technology had been gradually improved. And then bamboo and straw could also be used as the materials for making paper. Because of different materials, many kinds of paper were produced for different uses. For example, the Xuan paper made in Xuanzhou of Anhui Province belongs to the high-quality paper used for Chinese calligraphy and painting.
Papermaking technology was introduced to the Korean peninsula (半岛) and Japan in the late Sui and early Tang dynasties, and later to Arabia and other countries. During the Tang Dynasty, paper was folded and sewn into square bags to preserve the flavor of tea, while the later Song Dynasty was the first government on Earth to bring out paper-printed money.
The invention of paper provides a more convenient way for communication of information, and also plays an important role in the development of global civilization.
