You may be surprised to learn how many animals actually have a memory. 1 your goldfish can show evidence (证据) of learning ability. If you have a pet fish, try this 2. Every day when you feed the fish, sprinkle (撒) the food only in the same location.

Keep a record of daily observations (观察) of the fish, taking down notes about the fish's swimming directions or behavior whenever you come to feed it. Before long, the fish should swim to the spot where you sprinkle the food whenever you approach (靠近) the tank. See how it reacts (反应) to your approaching the tank and take notes before, 3, and after your experiment.

In this example of animals' memory, we don't really know if your fish knows the fact that you are going to feed it. But it has showed its 4 ability to learn and to remember.

Bees 5 with each other in a way which shows an intelligent memory. When a bee finds a good location for gathering nectar (花蜜), it will remember 6 to get to this location from its hive (蜂巢). The bee then returns to the hive and passes along its memory by doing a complex dance to inform the others of where the food was found. It uses wings, legs, antennae (触角) and body to deliver the message. When the dance is over, other bees fly to this location to bring back food for the hive.

  • 22. (2015九上·上海月考) Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

Suppose you are 17 and live alone with no money. Years ago, that was my dad. His father died when he was 10, and as the oldest of five, he had to take care of his brothers and sisters. When his mother remarried, my dad had to leave home. With few choices, he joined the army, and worked as hard as he could for a job, a nice house, and a family. Having a dad like him has made me different from other people; with his help and advice, I set and meet my goals.

When I wanted to play basketball, my dad said, “Don't let anyone tell you what you can or can't do.” People thought I was too small to play, but he let me know I could. Looking back now, I know why my dad said this to me: it was something his father and mother never told him.

Time flew by. It was time for me to look for a job. A department store offered me a job as cart assistant. For the whole day, I pushed shopping carts. It was so cold that I couldn't move my hands. But my dad wouldn't let me give up, even though I wanted to. He kept saying it would get better, and he was right. I've worked there for a year now and I do much more than just push carts.

My dad helped me grow into the person I'm becoming. When I was younger, I was small. The other boys called me “Lil Nicky”. I hated it. I went to my dad for a help. He encouraged me and helped me make an exercise plan and I got to work.

In my life, there are different roads. My dad helped me get on the one I continue on today. I know I am just at the beginning. There will be difficulties. But there will always be my dad. Even when he is not physically here for me, his words won't leave my mind.

  • 41. (2015九上·上海月考) Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)

Each and every year, during Chongyang Festival, citizens of China celebrate the elders in their families and communities. It's a special tradition which is rooted in the deep value that Chinese culture places on honouring their elders.

Sadly, many of our aging population are seniors without sons, daughters or grandchildren to visit. While they may have great friends, they no doubt miss the tender and loving relationships unique to families. To fill this void(空虚), many volunteers turned up on October 28 at nursing homes around the country in order to spend time with the residents. In some cases, they performed humble(谦逊的) gestures of kindness, such as combing their hair or washing their feet.

While the kind acts were appreciated, one embarrassing story out of Anhui province raised a valuable question. Reportedly, one old gentleman had his feet washed seven times during the day by different volunteers. Is this genuinely(真诚地) caring for the elderly? Many of the residents at the home said that those gestures do not make them feel cared for at all. Their family members or community volunteers may drop by for a few hours of token time, but soon they disappear back into their busy lives.

There is nothing we can give that is more valuable or appreciated than our time. While you may feel like there is barely enough time to care for your many responsibilities, might it be possible to spare just a moment as you walk home from school to sit with a senior who lives in your community? Just five minutes is not going to prevent you from getting your homework done, but it may totally change a day of loneliness into a day of joy for one old man or woman. Do you live far from your grandparents? Why not pick up the phone and let them know you're thinking of them? Or maybe you could remind them of the “good old days” and mail them a short letter. Imagine their surprise and joy!

We live in a complicated(复杂的) and busy world, but kindness and caring is still a very simple thing.

    1. (1) People in China celebrate the elders at Chongyang Festival, don't they?
    2. (2) Who appeared at nursing homes to spend time with the residents?
    3. (3) How many times did one old gentleman have his feet washed during the day?
    4. (4) Which gestures can make elders feel cared for ?
    5. (5) What did the family members of the residents at the home do?
    6. (6) Have you been to any nursing homes before? What did you do for the residents there?

If you haven't, please tell us what you did for the elders around you in the past.
