—Because I wanted to make my son happy."

The Turn off (关掉) TV Week starts today. People who organize (组织) it say that TV is a bad thing. I' m not sure if they're 1 .
First of all, the organizers say that children today are in bad physical condition (身体状况) because they 2 almost all their free time in front of the TV. But a 3 of 10,000 American children aged 10 to 15 found no connection (联系,) between TV and physical health. Children who don't watch TV don't always do more 4 .
Of course, there are some terrible programs on TV. 5 I don't think we should say no to TV. We 6 need to choose programs good for us ourselves. Another 7 that the organizers agree on (同意) is that TV stops us from talking with others. An American study found that parents in homes with no TV had an hour of talk with 8 children every day. In other homes, there was only 38 minutes of talk …… a week! That's bad. But TV can also bring people together and 9 to start a talk. Is there a better way to start a talk than by talking about, the latest popular programs?
Turn off my TV? OK. But I also10 to turn it on when there's something good on.
(After work, Jim, Peter and Pam are talking about movies.)
Jim: What are you doing now?
Peter: Not much.
Jim: I want to watch a movie.
Peter: What movie do you want to see?
Jim: I would like to see an action movie.
Peter: The new X-Men movie is on.
Jim: I want to see that, too. But what about Pam?
Pam: Then we can watch it together.
Jim: But which one can we watch?
Pam: Can we watch a funny movie? How about Night at the Museum?
Jim: Night at the Museum? I saw that last year.
Pam: No. This is Night at the Museum 2. It's another move with the same characters.
Jim: OK. That might be fun!
Peter:
Pam: There is a famous museum, the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The things in it come alive (活过来)!
Peter: OK! Now .I am interested!
Jim: Yeah! Me too. Let's go together!
A. I can go with you! B. That's an old movie. C. Do you have any plans? D I really want to see that. E. What's the movie about? F. What's your favorite movie? G. Why don't we choose another movie? |
It's Sunday morning. Peter and his friends had a great plan for the weekend, but the weather is bad.
Sarah: We have to change (改变) our plan for the weekend. What about going to the museum?
Sheila: I' m sorry. I don't want to go to the museum.
John: Well, how about going to the cinema?
Peter: That's a good idea. What's on at the Palladium?
Sarah: Smurfs The Lost village. It's a very interesting new cartoon movie.
Peter: How boring! I always feel bored with such cartoon movies. I think they are for little kids.
John: Well, an exciting movie is also on at the Palladium, The Fate of the Furious. I always love action movies.
Sarah: I heard it was fantastic. Let's go to see it.
Peter: OK. Action movies are my favorite.
Sheila: Great. Let's buy the tickets online now.
Karl was standing before the queen (女王). "You saved my horse," the queen said. "Now I want to give you a gift." The queen showed him two " boxes. In one box, there were lots of beautiful jewels (宝石), and in the other, there were two chickens.
"Only one box can be yours," the queen said. "Make a wise choice (明智的选择)."
"That's easy," Karl said. "I'll take the chickens." Some of the people around them laughed. They thought he made a foolish choice.
"And why did you choose the chickens?" the queen asked. "Well, I don't know much about jewels," Karl answered. "But I do know about chickens. The chickens will give eggs to my family for a long time."
The queen smiled. "The jewels you see are only colored glass (玻璃). The chickens are much more valuable ( 宝贵的)," she said. "You made a wise choice." Karl thanked the queen and got the box of chickens.
"You are a smart man," the queen said. "I need a smart man to help take care of my horses. Would you like the job?" Karl smiled and said, "Yes. Thank you!"
The job paid well. Now Karl's family could have a good life all because of his choice.

We always think classical (古典的) music fans are quiet and shy, and lovers of rap (说唱音乐) are outgoing.According to a study in Edinburgh, it is.
Professor North, who did the study, says that people often show their personalities through the kind of music they listen to. More than 36,000 people from around the world joined-the study. Here are some of the results:
Western and country music fans are hard-working and not shy.
Classical music fans are quiet.
Rap fans are outgoing.
People think heavy metal fans are very sad and unhappy. But like classical music fans, they are in fact easy-going and creative, and not very outgoing.
Heavy metal fans in Sweden have more in common with heavy metal fans in Brazil than with Swedish fans of pop.
A. Fans of pop songs aren't creative, but are hard-working and outgoing. B. Maybe the most surprising result is that classical music fans and heavy metal (重金属摇滚乐) fans have very similar personalities. C. But is it really true that our musical tastes show our personalities (性格)? D. They talked about their musical tastes and did personality tests. E. Professor North says that the results also explain (解释) why so many people are good friends with people who like the same music. |
