Every day, a homeowner in Pennsylvania is reminded of a mistake he made 13 years ago. At around 8 in the evening, his peaceful house comes alive with the noise of an alarm clock he dropped into the wall over ten years ago. It's been stuck in the wall ever since.
13 years ago, Jerry Lynn wanted to make a hole through his living room wall, so he could pass the television cable (电缆)through it. He didn't want to destroy any pipes in the wall, so he came up with a good idea to make sure that he was drilling(钻孔) in an empty place. He took his alarm clock, tied it to a string(线) and set it to go off in 10 minutes. Then he lowered it into the wall, and waited for it to ring. His goal was to drill a hole in a safe place near the place where the ringing was coming from, making sure that there was nothing to pass through there. It all went smoothly until the alarm clock fell into the wall.
The man didn't get back the alarm clock, but thought it would probably run out of battery(电池)in several months, so he wasn't too worried about it. But 13 years later, the alarm clock still rings every day.
As you can imagine, Jerry and his wife have gotten used to the ringing living room wall, but it can still surprise guests. So Jerry decides to pull down that wall, just to stop that boring thing, though after putting up with it for 13 years, he think it will be a pity. He says, “I've never herd of a clock battery lasting that long and my friends think it may be interesting to see how long it will keep ringing for.”
Roald Dahl is a beloved British writer. He is the writer of some of the world's best-known children's novels, including James and Giant Peach, Matilda, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
More than 250 million copies of his books have been sold worldwide. His works have been translated into 58 languages. Tuesday was Roald Dahl Day. People around the world celebrated what would have been Dahl's 100th birthday. He was born in 1916 in Wales. He died in 1990.
Roald Dahl Day was worldwide on social media(媒体). Many people thanked Dahl for making them truly enjoy reading. One Twitter user wrote, “My childhood was made magical because of the wonderful Roald Dahl. A great storyteller!” Another wrote, “You made me fall in love with reading—a love that has lasted me a lifetime.” Special events and celebrations were held in Britain and other countries in honor of Dahl.
The Oxford English Dictionary marked Dahl's 100th birthday by officially adding six Dahl-created words to its latest edition. They included words such as “Oompah- Loompah” and “scrumdiddlyumptious.”
Oompah Loompahs are the factory workers in the book—Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They had orange skin and green hair. They danced and played music. Oompah Loompahs became more famous after the 1971 film of the book, which starred Gene Wilder as candy maker Willy Wonka.
“Scrumdiddlyumptious” is a word that appeared in Dahl's book- The BFG—short for The Big Friendly Giant. It generally means “delicious”. A film of The BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg, was released(发行)this year
Earlier this year, Ocford released an entire Roald Dahl dictionary. It included more than 8,000 real and invented words used by the master storyteller.
A new study finds almost one third of the world's population is overweight. Since 1980, obesity rates(肥胖率)in children and adults have doubled in 73 countries, making people more worried. And rates are increasing in many other countries. Obesity is increasing faster in children than adults in many nations, including Algeria, Turkey and Jordan, the report said. But the world's weight problem is growing in both rich and poor countries alike. Researchers say an increasing number of people are dying of related health problems in what they called a "disturbing global public health problem."
Researchers studied health information from 1980 through 2015. They examined obesity rates, average weight gain in 195 countries. They found that obesity rates are three times greater among youth and young adults in countries like China, Brazil and India. Almost 108 million children and more than 600 million adults were found to be overweight. Egypt had the highest number of overweight adults in 2015. Vietnam had the least. In the same year, the United States had the highest number of overweight children, and Bangladesh had the least.
Yet hunger remains a problem in many areas. The United Nations said that almost 800 million people, including 300 million children, go to bed hungry each night. Experts said poor diets and lack of physical activity are mainly to blame for the rising numbers of overweight people.
Growing populations have led to rising obesity rates in poor countries. Often, poor people will eat processed(加工的) foods instead of choosing a diet rich in vegetables.
The London-based Overseas Development Institute studied the price of food in five countries: Britain, Brazil, China, Mexico and South Korea. It found that the cost of processed foods like ice cream and hamburgers has fallen since 1990. But the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables has gone up.
