It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain 1 almost a month. The crops were dying. If we 2see some rain soon, we would lose everything.
I was making lunch in the kitchen when I saw my3 son, Billy, walking towards the woods. He was walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes later, he was once again walking towards the woods. I4 stand it any longer. I went out of the house and followed him.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill (溢出)the water he carried.
As I came closer, I saw 5 sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked straight up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. But the deer 6 hurt him nor even moved as Billy got down. And then I saw a baby deer7on the ground, thirsty, lift its head to lap up(舔) the water in my boy's hands. When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to a tap. Billy opened it and let the drip slowly fill up his “cup”.
8he stood up and began to turn back, I was there in front of him. His little eyes9with tears. Very quickly, he explained10he was not wasting water. The week before, he had made 11 same trouble with our horses,12caused him a lecture from his father about the importance of not wasting water.
This time, I joined him, with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him 13 the baby deer alone , for it was 14job. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they 15 by other drops... more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. All I can say is that the rain came that day saved our farm, just like the actions of one little boy saved the little deer.
Last winter vacation, my brother got a set of bedroom furniture for his thirteenth birthday. When it arrived, I helped my parents moved the 1 furniture to the garage(车库). It was still in good condition. I thought it might be a chance for us to 2 someone in our community. I started to search neighbors, anyone who 3 a bedroom set. Finally, my mom helped me call the local primary school. They told me about Jaila, the daughter of a poor single mother. I was given a telephone number and 4, and I soon found myself at Jaila's.
The moment I went into Jaila's room, I knew I had taken on too big a task. When I pushed the old door open, it made a long high noise. But the door was nothing compared with the rest of the room. Some old paint was 5 the wall. One of the windows was 6 The bed was just a mattress(床垫)on the old carpet. It seemed that the room needed7furniture — it cried — for a complete makeover(翻新).
That day I spent at least an hour looking around and 8how I could possibly fixed the room. I had never painted a wall, let alone fixed a floor. The second day, I returned with a large group of helpers — my close friends. We went to collect everything needed door to door in our community. We replaced and repainted Jaila's room. We sweated in Jaila's house for more than ten hours every day that week.
The moment we finished, we called Jaila into the room. She jumped, laughed and hugged each of us. I turned to Jaila's mother, and saw she had tears running down her face.
“Anna,” Jaila called my name9.
“Yes?”
“Welcome to my new room!”
When we saw how happy Jaila and her mother were, our tiredness disappeared into thin air. We are really 10 to make a special experience of changing someone's life.

There is plenty to do during the science fair. Of course, you will want to take a look at all of the students' projects. There will be other exciting things too. These events will highlight(亮点)the wonderful world of science. The announcement of the winners will take place at the awards ceremony(典礼)on Friday afternoon. Several of the other events are listed below.
Meet a Robot!
Can people and robots work together? The answer is “Yes”. Scientists will be at the fair on Thursday October 30, with Modo. Modo is a robot helper being developed to help people with jobs they do. Let's learn how Modo's large blue eyes are able to “see” things. Watch Modo take and hold objects and move them from side to side. Then see how Modo puts the objects on a shelf. Touch Modo on the arm. Watch what happens! It will respond to your touch. If you push it too hard, it will say, “Ouch”!
Our Own !
As is known to all, William Shakespeare is well-known to almost all writers while Thomas Edison is familiar to the inventors. Here comes our local Thomas Edison. Make sure you're in the gym at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. That's when local genius Ray Allen will give a talk about his life as an inventor. He will also show what his inventions can do.

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States.“Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand's series appeared in different newspapers throughout the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don't all have the same coffee culture. In Europe for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed, when Starbucks (星巴克) coffee shops spread throughout the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington,in the USA. It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop's business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment (设备) . He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company's head of marketing (市场营销).
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso (浓咖啡) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores in the USA. Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing (竞争) for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the comfortable environment offered by Starbucks.
a. This man helped to make Starbucks a huge coffee company.
b. Starbucks began as a small coffee company in Seattle in the USA.
c. He went to Seattle to learn about the company and later worked for it.
d. Howard Schultz found Starbucks ordered lots of special coffee makers.
Do you have a good sense of direction? If not, please take with you a compass. But if you forget to take a compass, you can still find your way during the trip.
Suppose you are hiking with your family somewhere in the mountain in Dan Xia Mountain, you need to find the direction of south to find your way back. But none of your family members can read the map and actually knows where the family is. Never mind. The sun is shining and it's still morning. If you don't know the exact time, you can still find out where south is, but you'll need to be patient.
①Find a straight stick and put it in the ground in a place where you can mark its shadow.
②Try to put the stick as vertically (垂直) as you can. You can check this by making a simple plumb line (铅锤线) with a piece of string (绳子) and weight. You haven't got any string? Ok, use a thread from your clothes with a button tied at the end to act as a weight.
③After the stick is put vertically, you can see its shadow on the ground. Mark the end of the shadow.
④Wait about half an hour and mark the end of the shadow again.
⑤Keep doing this until you have made several marks.
⑥The mark nearest the stick will show the shortest shadow when it is midday, because at that time the sun is highest in the sky and pointing to the exact south.
⑦Pick a point in the distance along the line between the shortest shadow and the stick.
⑧That point is south of where you are.
⑨Now you can turn the map, like you did before, and find which way you should choose for traveling.
①It is a fine day and the sun is shining brightly.
②You are travelling with your family.
③You have a straight stick, a piece of string and a button.
④You mark the shadow every half an hour .
⑤You check the marks on the stick.

Learn to Refuse
Believe it or not, I've always been a people pleaser. I often put others before myself because I want to make my friends happy.
“Can you help me with my English?” Grace asked me on the first day after she became my desk mate. “Of course,” I replied without hesitation(犹豫). Grace has been working really hard on her studies and needed my help — although I didn't have much time left for her.
One day after school, while I was doing a huge amount of homework, Grace's phone call came. but I still felt bad about saying no. When Grace ended the call, the clock said it was 00:15 am. But I still had homework left and I wanted to sleep. This was bad for a Junior 3 student who is going to take an important exam this June.
Finally I burst into tears. I felt so tired and realized that the stress had an effect on my health. I tried to get myself out. Studying is more important than other things, . It's now important for me to say no, no, no. “Can you do me a favor?” Grace asked last Monday. “Sorry I just have to review my biology notes,” I answered. “All right, it's up to you,” she said. I felt completely relaxed when I heard her reply.
To be honest, I have felt much happier since learning to refuse. I have more time to spend on my study at present. I still try my best to help others,.
A. She complained a lot and it made me feel bored
B. If anyone asks me for help, I always say, “yes!”
C. Anyway, it's not so hard to say no at all
D. but sometimes I say no because I know everyone has a limit
E. so Grace has to come the second
