One of the things to be learnt in a foreign language is guessing all the time what kind of thing to come when listening to someone talking. People do this all the time in their own language, so it is necessary (必要的) to do this in a foreign language, too. Here are some examples.
⒈"What's the matter?" "I went to a party last night, so I…"
⒉"I feel so tired these days."" I think you'd better…"
⒊"Of course, she never stops talking. She is one of the most…"
You can see from the above three examples that the context (上下文) helps a lot in understanding what is being talked about. So "guessing "is very important in understanding English, especially (尤其)spoken English.
On Christmas Eve─the night before Christmas Day─children all over Britain put a stocking at the end of their beds before they go to sleep. Their parents usually tell them that Father Christmas will come during the night.
Father Christmas is very kind and hearted. He gets to the top of each house and climbs down the chimney into the fireplace. He fills each of the stockings with Christmas presents.
Of course, Father Christmas isn't real. In Jim and Kate's house, "Father Christmas" is really Mr Green. Mr Green doesn't climb down the chimney. He waits until the children are asleep. Then he quietly goes into their bedrooms and fills their stockings with small presents. When they were very young, Mr Green sometimes wore a red coat. But he doesn't do that now. The children are no longer young, and they know who "Father Christmas" really is. But they still put their stockings at the end of their beds.

How many people do you with in a day? Probably a lotthan you did years ago. Now we can “talk” to people in many not just face to face or on the phone, butthrough the Internet. It is very important for us to try and improve our communication skills, so let'sthe four golden rules of good communication. First, be as clearyou can. Misunderstandings happen if we don't saywhat we mean. Second, we have to work hardlistening. Pay attention to what the other person is saying. Third, ask other people what they think. give them time to say what they want, and show an interest in what they say.
you follow these rules , you will be a good communicator.
Cars are very important in the life of the Americans. ⑴Without a car, most American people would feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor, he doesn't really feel poor when he has a car. ⑵Henry Ford was the man who started making cars in large numbers. He probably didn't know how much cars would affect the American culture. Cars have made the United States a nation on wheels. And ⑶it has helped to make the United States what it is today.

Children know that summer is probably the most fun of all seasons. However, experts say it is also the most dangerous, especially, for children aged 14 and under. In its first study of children's safety in the US, the National Safe Kids Campaign(NSKC) founds that nearly half of the injury-related(与受伤相关的) deaths among children happened in summer.
Experts are not surprised by the study's results. They always know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of the school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident or be injured. “While we encourage children to be active and spend more time outdoors, they need to understand the importance of safety,” said Everett Koop, an expert of the NSKC.
To help children say safe, the NSKC started a “Make it a Safe Kids Summer” campaign during National Safe Kids Week, from May 5 through May 12. Here are some important summer safety tips from the NSKC:
Always wear your seat belt.
Make sure there is an adult around when you decide to go swimming.
Wear a life jacket when on a boat or doing water sports.
Obey all traffic rules.
Do you often use a cellphone? Do you take the subway to school every day? These items make our modern life easier. But do you know how we should behave properly while using them? The following suggestions might be helpful. For cellphone users
Keep your voice down when you make a phone call in public. Shouting on the phone may make others feel uncomfortable. And you'd better not use it during an appointment(约会).
Stop sending messages or playing games with your cellphone at a dinner or a party. It's a good time to communicate(交流)with your family and friends.
Don't make or answer a call while driving. It is not only very dangerous for both you and your passengers but also against the law. For subway passengers
You are supposed to wait in line while buying tickets and getting on the subway.
You're not allowed to eat, drink or smoke on the subway train. The smell and noise may trouble others. It's our duty to keep the train clean and tidy. Besides, smoking is bad for health.
You can't take pets on the train. As we all know, animals may spread diseases(传播疾病)and get the train dirty.
You'd better not lie across the subway seats even if the train isn't crowded. Offering your seat to someone who needs it is regarded as good manners.
