Two summers ago I was about to turn fifty and wanted to do something I'd never done before. My daughter Bailey thought skydiving (跳伞) would be perfect for me. I can promise you that of all the things I was thinking of doing, jumping out of an airplane never came close to making the list. As I age, I seem to have developed a growing fear of heights.

After several requests from my daughter, I finally said yes and she looked almost shocked. I told a friend what we were doing, then we set off. We had a 3-hour drive to the jump site. We drove through some beautiful countryside, but then we passed a small cemetery(墓地). Then we passed another cemetery and another one. I asked if so many people died jumping out of airplanes in this area that they needed to keep building more cemeteries to bury all the bodies!

As we squeezed into the little plane, I tightly held the right hand of my partner Ronnie. The short ride to altitude was cruel for me. As Bailey stepped to the door, she looked back at me and said “Dad, I'm sure you can do it!” I said yes as she rolled out. I immediately looked behind me and said “RONNIE I AM NOT FEELING GOOD!” He said, “It's going to be great. Besides, it's too late now anyway”, and we jumped out.

The next five minutes were some of the most amazing of my life. It was so beautiful and peaceful—except for the parts where I was screaming. I prayed to God for the parachute (降落伞) to open, but mostly I told Him how thankful I was for my life and being with me through good and bad.

Movies are a great means of entertainment for many. There are some advantages of watching movies. Comedies, for example, help reduce your blood pressure. Laughter for 15 minutes during a film makes your blood vessels (血管) wider. Besides, when you watch a sad movie, you're more likely to come away from it thinking about loved ones and feeling happy about what you have.

Watching movies can make you creative. A study shows that young children, who watched the use of magic in Harry Potter, score significantly higher in a creative thinking test than children who watched something else. Moreover, movies are very useful for strengthening people's mental health. They enable people to take time to really relax and temporarily forget about their daily concerns and problems.

However, watching movies aren't always beneficial. Studies have shown that some people get real pleasure out of being scared by horror movies, but in various ways they may be risking their physical and mental health without even knowing it. When you watch a tense scene in a movie, your heart rate and blood pressure increase. Meanwhile this change in your brain chemistry reminds you of times when you were in a similar state, even if you have no idea you even had those memories. So if something horrible happens to you, being scared again by a movie can unintentionally make you experience it once more.

Scientists, politicians and parents have debated for decades if being exposed to movie violence leads to actual real-life violence. Overall the answer to that is probably still up in the air, but a new study seems to prove that watching aggression on screen can contribute to being a bully (土霸) in real life, even if it is just in the short term.

In conclusion, certain movies play a positive role, but not all movies do. It depends completely on the subject of the movie. So it's always advisable to choose the movies concerning something positive.

    1. (1) How does watching sad movies benefit us according to the text?
A . It makes us content with our lives. B . It rids us of unhappy memories. C . It reduces our risk of illness. D . It develops our creativity.
    2. (2) What can we infer about watching horror movies from the text?
A . It has more advantages than disadvantages. B . It has gained popularity around the world. C . Plenty of people ignore its health benefits. D . All people don't realize its disadvantages.
    3. (3) What does the underlined part “up in the air” in Paragraph 4 mean?
      A . Meaningless. B . Attractive. C . Uncertain. D . Obvious.
    4. (4) What does the author advise us to do to reduce the passive effect of movies?
A . Enjoy movies with more companions. B . Make a wise choice of what to watch. C . Try our best to watch movies less often. D . Raise our ability to tell right from wrong.

Anger itself is neither good nor bad. It's what we do when we're angry that matters. Anger is a tool that helps us to read and respond to the social situations that bother us. But how can we keep it under control?

It's normal to think that getting angry is bad and many times we punish ourselves for doing so. But contrary to popular belief, research indicates that anger increases optimism, creativity and efficiency (效率). In addition, studies suggest that anger can lead to more successful negotiations at work, as well as in our personal lives.

In fact, suppressing (抑制) anger can be very bad for your health. In this sense, Dr. Ernest Harburg performed a study by monitoring a group of adults and their capacity (最大容量) for anger. What he found is that the men and women who suppressed their anger as a response to an unfair attack had a higher risk of developing bronchitis (支气管炎) or suffering from heart attacks, and were more likely to die before their colleagues who let their anger surface (显现) when they felt bothered.

When anger arises, we feel the need to either prevent or put an end to this powerful feeling for the benefit of our welfare or the welfare of those we care about. But this act of kindness, mercy, love or justice isn't beneficial in this way. However, it's certainly a good thing to be cautious when anger begins to surface. Expressing your anger can be appropriate with certain people at certain times. The question lies in how to do it without losing control. The key to expressing your anger is finding the appropriate tone for expressing what it is that upsets you. But to avoid unnecessary shouting, hitting, or other violent reactions, it's worth taking a moment to step back and think, even though we may be in the middle of an argument with someone.

    1. (1) What do people generally think of anger?
A . It is an important tool. B . It is a bad feeling state. C . It increases our happiness. D . It helps in social situations.
    2. (2) What does Dr. Ernest Harburg's study imply about anger?
A . It needs a way out. B . It should be avoided. C . It can cause sudden death. D . It must be kept under control.
    3. (3) What does the author suggest we do when we're angry?
A . Find out its cause. B . Pretend to ignore it. C . React to it violently. D . Express it reasonably.
    4. (4) Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A . Ways to Control Anger B . Benefits of Mild Anger C . Showing Anger Fitly Counts D . Anger Does Affect Health

In a world full of uncertainty, having at least one thing you can count on is important For others it could be reading or running. For me, however, it is always art.

Creating can be difficult, but that's what makes art special. You can start your project with what you want and you can change your mind many times Art has taught me to be patient with myself.

If I could name my favourite thing about art, it would be that no two pieces are the same.         Listen, feel and see more, it will fascinate (使入迷) you how much more you appreciate the small things around you.

Art is seen differently by everyone. However, one thing in common is creativity. You don't need to be good at painting to enjoy something beautiful. Be ready to be patient, be yourself and be good at observing
