Since this fall, more than 20,000 primary students in one Florida school district in the United States have enjoyed school life without the usual homework. Instead, they are being asked to read for 20 minutes each night, reported USA Today.
The district has carried out a "no homework" policy (政策). Heidi Maier, the leader of the public schools, said in an interview that she made the decision based on research. Homework does not help students get good grades in primary school.
Maier is not alone. Around the US, many primary schools are trying out a no-homework policy, which has caused debate (争议) among educators and parents.
Some support Maier, saying without homework, kids can have more quality time with family and playing sports. But some argue that homework is needed to memorize the information and help kids build daily routines (作息规律), according to TIME for Kids.
In fact, arguments over homework have been going on for over a century in the US, noted the Washington Post. "This is part of a long history of conflict (冲突) over homework," Paula Fass, a professor at the University of California, told TIME for Kids. "And that can be expected to continue."
