Jessie goes to the woods with Jamie to get some green branches to decorate the house for Christmas. She is a happy girl, but she feels sad today because her mother said to her, "People will all have Christmas presents, but I think I will not get any present for myself. We are too poor this year."
When Jessie tells her brother about this, they start to talk about it." Such a good, kind mother, and no Christmas present! It's too bad."
"I don't like it." Says little Jessie, with tears in her eyes.
"She has you." Says Joe.
"But I am not something new." Says Jessie.
"You will be when you get back".
Jessie jumps and laughs. "Then put me in the basket and carry me to our mother, and tell her I am her present".
So they put her in the basket and put green branches all around her. They put the basket on the doorstep and go into the house and say to their mother, "There is a Christmas present out there for you, Mother."
Mother goes out and looks, and there, in a basket of green branches, sitting her own little daughter.
"Oh, that's what I want most," says Mother.
"Then dear mother," says Jessie, she jumps out of the basket." It will be Christmas for mothers all the time because they see their little girls every day."
