Susan B. Anthony was born on February 15th, 1820, in Massachusetts. In the 1800s, American women had no right in government. Anthony spent her life trying to change that.
As a teacher, she wanted better pay for women teachers. She also worked to end slavery. Anthony soon saw that women needed the right to vote in order to make these changes happen.
In 1851, she met Elizabeth Cady Stanton. They worked together to make sure that women would have the right to vote one day. Anthony gave speeches all over the US. Some people said she was bossy(专断的). Anthony said she just wanted to succeed. "I feel I must watch every potato which goes into the dinner pot and supervise every detail of the work," she once said.
Every year, from 1869 to 1906, Anthony spoke to the US Congress. She asked for an amendment to the constitution that would give women the right to vote. Sadly, she died in 1906, before her dream came true.
The 19th Amendment was passed in 1919. In 1979, the new Susan B. Anthony dollar coin made her the first real woman image to appear on the US money.
