More Americans hope to work past their 65th birthday and never retire(退休).The Associated Press with the NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research asked 1075 people, aged 50 and older. One-fourth of them said they never planned to retire. Among people who earn less in that age group that is even truer than the ones who earn more.
In America, as tradition(传统), the age of 65 is the common age to retire. Sixty percent of people aged 50 to 64 said they expect to work past their 65th birthday More than half of those who are already older than 65 said they plan to keep working too. They say they are working 31 hours a week. Those 50 years of age or older said money was the most important reason that affected(影响) when to retire. Most of the workers—especially those who are 65 and older—plan to move into a new profession(行业), as they come into the later years. One-third of people earning less than $5000 a year said they would keep working. About twenty percent of those who earn more than $100000 said they would never retire.
People born from 1946 to 1964 reach age 65, and the United States' population will have more older people than ever before. The number of Americans 65 and older jumped twenty-one percent—or to 35.5 million—from 2002 to 2012. That number will probably reach 92 million by 2060.
