A clever farmer got a job to send a roast goose (烤鹅) to the kind emperor. One day, the smell of the roast goose became too much forand he was hungry, so he ate one of its legs.
Of course the emperor saw itthe farmer gave him the goose. He got very angry. The emperor was born with one bad leg, and people chose the words. No one had talked about the bad leg with the emperor before. So he thought the one-leg goose was to laugh at his bad leg. "Where is the other leg of the goose?" the emperor asked.
"All the geese in this city have one leg only," the farmer answered. Suddenly the emperor shouted, "I treat (对待) people with. But do you think I'm stupid?" "Certainly not," said the farmer, "youand say sorry to me if you go outside and look at the geese."
The emperor looked out with otherin his house, and the geese were resting on one leg beside the water. The emperor at once told one of his menthem with a big stick (棍子), and soon, they put down their other legs and ran away. "That shows they here have two legs, youme now," said the emperor. "But it doesn't mean anything," answered the farmer, "The speed (速度) that I run away will be muchwhile people throw a stick at me, just like the geese." Then the emperor understood.he just smiled and let the farmer go home without killing him.
