The teacher that has influenced me most
I was nine when I arrived at the Children's Home in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1965. I1the third grade that year, barely making it2a second time. Then I reached Pauline Jambard's fourth-grade class at Charlotte Avenue Elementary School.
I3I wasn't "smart" like the other kids. Luckily for me, Ms Jambard took an immediate4to me. Of all the subjects in school,5was my favorite. She told me, "Terry, you should6reading. If you can understand what you're reading, you'll be7than most kids." After I read all the books in our program, I started reading the classroom's set of encyclopedia. I couldn't find enough to read, and I no longer8school.
The Children's Home held a Christmas party for family and community members that9.My brother and I had no family to10. I still remember looking up and seeing Ms Jambard walking through the front door of the Children's Home and11she was there to see me. That was the12Christmas of my life.
After I graduated in 1969, I lost touch with my13. In 1983, I was on a business trip and had to drive through Nashua. I took a14and visited Charlotte Avenue Elementary School.15,I was walking toward her classroom when she came out in the hallway and said," Terry!" It was as if I had never16.I was overjoyed on my flight home.
We have stayed17ever since. Because of the18she had in me, I went on to have a19career in engineering and law. I don't know if Ms Pauline realizes how much she20me, but I'll never forget her kindness and faith in me.
