Henri Matisse grew up in the northern part of France. In 1889, Matisse became ill, his mother got him some art supplies for something to do. He (immediate) fell in love with painting and decided to become an artist.
Matisse began to explore painting. His mother encouraged him not to follow the normal rules of art, but (try) out new things and to paint his emotions. In 1897, Matisse met (paint) John Peter Russell. Russell introduced him to the work of Van Gogh and it opened up new world to Matisse. In this year, this gifted man painted his first masterpiece (call) The Dinner Table.
In the early 1990s, Matisse developed a new style. He began to paint in bright masses of colors. In 1905 Matisse, together fellow artists Maurice de Vlaminck and Andre Derain, exhibited (they) new style to the world. They were called "fauves", which meant "wild beasts". The paintings expressed emotion with wild, often dissonant(不和谐) colors, without regard for the subject's (nature) colors.
Matisse (consider) one of the leading figures of modern art as his paintings and art influenced many artists throughout the 20th century
