The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional lunar calendar. The exact date changes year to year on the Gregorian calendar. In 2020, it (fall) on June 25th. The festival was long marked as a cultural festival in China, the government, however, did not officially(官方地) recognize Duanwu as a public holiday 2008.
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of three major Chinese (holiday), along with the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. Of the three, it is possibly the(old), dating back to the Warring States Period in 227 B.C. The festival commemorates(纪念) Qu Yuan, a ministerin the service of the Chu Emperor. Despairing(感到绝望的) over corruption at court, Qu threw (he) into a river.

This is said to have been the origin(起源) of dragon boat races.his body could not be found, they dropped balls of sticky rice into the river so that the fish would eat themof Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the origin of zongzi.
The focus of most celebrations involves eating zongzi (sticky rice/glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves), drinking realgar wine(雄黄酒), and racing dragon boats.
