There are many kinds of animals in the world. Some of them are important and special in some countries. Like the panda in China, the kangaroo in Australia, and the lion in England. In Thailand, the elephant is very important. It's the symbol(标志) of luck, and there is even a white elephant on the first flag of Thailand.
Today, there are only about 1, 500 elephants (over 100, 000 before) in Thailand. The elephant is brown or gray. It's very tall, usually between 3 and 4. 5 metres. It is heavy. It weighs(重) between 5, 000 and 7, 000 kilograms. It's too large, so it is difficult for it to lie down. It usually sleeps standing up. It eats as much as 225 kilograms of food in a day. The elephant has very long and strong teeth called tusks. The elephant can't see well, but its ears and nose make up for it. Elephants have long noses called trunks and they use them to get food, put the food into their mouths, drink water and talk to friends.
The elephant is a smart animal. It can play football or music. It can draw very well too. It can walk for a long time and never gets lost. It can remember places with food and water very well, so people say, "An elephant never forgets. " This helps it to live.
