Yuan long ping, (call) the father of hybrid rice, passed away on Saturday.
Born in Beijing in 1930, Yuan and his parents moved during his childhood from Tianjin to Chongqing to Hubei.
In the early 1960s, Yuan began research into developing hybrid rice strains while (teach) in an agricultural school in Hunan Province.
At that time, China faced a (short) in resources owing natural disasters.
In the 1970s,Yuan cultivated first hybrid rice that yielded 20％(much) than conventional rice. Since then, his hybrid rice varieties (promote) promoted to 8. 5 billion mu of farmland across China, (feed) 80 million people each year.
The hybrid rice varieties were also promoted to dozens of countries in Asia, Africa and the America.
Yuan won accolades at home and abroad, (include) China's first National Highest Science and Technology Award in 2000 and the World Food Prize in2004. In 2019, he was honored with the Medal of the Republic.
