How many hours do you spend sitting in a chair every day? Eight hours in the office and three hours in front of the TV after work is common for many people.

You don't need an expert to tell you that sitting too much is not good for your health. It will increase (增加) the risk of heart disease(疾病) and make you fatter. It will also be bad for your neck and spine (脊椎). A good diet and exercise can't make you better if you sit too much. The death rate for people who spend more hours sitting down is higher. In other words, sitting is killing us.                . Health experts suggest (建议) we should spend more hours standing instead of sitting.

The BBC and University of Chester in the UK did a simple experiment (实验) with a small group of volunteers who usually spent most of the day sitting. They were asked to stand for at least three hours a day. The researchers found out that the blood glucose (葡萄糖) leveled off after a meal much quicker on the days when the volunteers stood. Standing also burned more calories (卡路里)—about 50 calories an hour.
