Since Tu Youyou received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, her hometown, a small old town of Ningbo, Zhejiang, has attracted lots of visitors, especially parents and their kids. In fact, it's not open to the public.
Tu received the prize for discovering artemisinin(青蒿素)--an important kind of traditional Chinese medicine that has helped save millions of lives across the world.
Many parents go there with their kids and they usually take photos in front of Tu's house. Xu Ling fei, a visitor from Shanghai, took her 10-year-old son to walk around the old house." Chinese people often have a strong feeling for famous people, so taking kids to visit famous people's old houses is a common way to encourage them to study hard," said Xu. In fact, something similar happened after Mo Yan had received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Lots of tourists visited Mo's old house in Gaomi, Shandong. Some even took away carrots and bricks(砖块)around his old house.
This may be the celebrity effect(名人效应) that Chinese people pay a lot of attention to.
