In the middle of the 17th century, people first put candles on Christmas trees. Later when electricity was widely used, people started to use electric lights instead candles.
The American custom of (use) electric lights began in1882 when Ed-ward
Johnson, a friend of Thomas Edison's, connected eighty red, white blue electric light and put them around a green tree. In 1895, Grover Cleveland, put up a Christmas tree with electric lights on it. The public started to follow him. Some large (store)n put up such Christmas trees to attract customers. In early 19900s, a tree with electric lights cost at least $ 300. Because of that, Christmas trees with electric lights weren't very popular. Some most families had to put candles on (they) Christmas trees.
In 1917, a serious fire was caused by the candles in a Christmas tress in New York City. When 15-year- old boy, Albert Sadacca, read this story in a newspaper, he advised his parents (make) electric lights for Christmas trees. He thought it would be much (safe) if electric lights took the place of candles. His parents then started a company to produce electric light for Christmas trees. The lights sold very well they were painted red, green and other colors. And they (be) cheap. Soon the company became the largest Christmas lighting company in the world.
