Itwasn't easy for Sally Gardner to become asuccessful writer. Gardner has dyslexia, a kind of learning disorder ( 疾病) that makes people havedifficulty reading and remembering words. When she was little, students in theschool didn't like her because of her dyslexia. Teachersthought she was not smart, even though she showed a special talent for art. ButGardner proved (证明) thatshe could do something great.
At theage of 14, Gardner taught herself how to read. When she read, she could see thepictures and words in her head like a movie. Her mind was full of colorfulworlds. At that time, Gardner thought dyslexia gave her a gift. Because of it,she could use her imagination (想象力)better than other children.
Gardner used her artistic talent and got intoan art school. There she took up writing as a hobby. And later her love for writingdrove her to work as a writer. At first, she wrote mainly for children. In2005, her book I, Coriander wonthe Nestle Children's Book Prize, one of the world's mostimportant prizes for children's books. Today, Gardnerstill writes books for children. She also writes books for young adults (成年人) now. Her books arepopular with people all over the world.
Gardneralso encourages children with dyslexia by telling them never to give up andthat everyone has their own talent. She said,"Ittakes time to work out how to deal with (应付)dyslexia, but once you find the right way, it can be the most wonderful gift."
