Good health can be defined as physical, mental, and social wellbeing, and as a resource for living a full life. But maintaining good health doesn't happen by accident.

Studies have found that inflammation (炎症) can damage tissue, joints, artery walls, and organs. A healthy diet is rich in fiber, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, good or unsaturated fats, and omega-3 fatty acids. The Mediterranean diet meets all of the criteria for good health, and there is convincing evidence that it is effective at warding off heart attack, stroke, and premature death.

Physical activity is also necessary for good health. There are many benefits to exercising regularly. These include a lower risk of diseases like cancer and diabetes, improved physical function, and a higher quality of life. For example, pregnant women who engage in routine physical activity are less likely to gain a large amount of weight or experience depression after giving birth, elderly people who exercise are at lower risk of being injured during a fall.

Stress can have both direct and indirect effects that undermine physical health and body. Finding ways to reduce stress is another strategy that can help you stay healthy, given the connection between stress and a variety of disorders. Try meditation, mindfulness, yoga, playing on weekends, and taking vacations.

If something happens to your health, a physician you know—and who knows you—is in the best position to help. He or she knows how to deal with everything from helping you through a bout with the flu to back pain and digestion issues, to uncovering serious illnesses like cancer and heart disease.
