Badger is asleep when Rat rings his front doorbell.
"Who is it?"he calls.
"It's me, Rat, and my friend Mole," Rat calls back, "Please let us in. We're tired and cold. It starts to snow outside. "
"Come in, my friends, come in," he calls, "Come and warm yourselves by the fire," Badger says. "And join me for supper. It's nearly ready. "
They sit at his table and begin to eat.
"I've heard bad news about Toad," Badger says. "He bought a car. He drives around the countryside like a mad man. He's already had several accidents (事故). If he's not careful, he'll kill himself. Or someone else. "
"What can we do?" Rat says. "He never listens to anything I say. "
At that moment, Badger's front doorbell rings.
Badger stands up. A few minutes later, he comes back and has Toad with him.
"I had a small accident," Toad says, "I ran into some weasels (鼬). They were standing in the road. The car is useless now. "
"How many 'useless' cars are there now?" Badger asks.
"I don't know. Six, maybe. No, seven. "
"Why do you have all these accidents, Toad?" Badger demands.
"The cars are no good, of course. " Toad says, "They don't stop in time. "
"I think it's your careless driving that makes you have so many accidents. " Badger says.
"My driving! There's nothing wrong with my driving," Toad exclaims.
