In cities all over the world, it is common to see beggars (流浪汉)in the street. Some of them might ask you for money. Some of them might ask for food. Some of them might be disabled(残疾的)or seriously ill. But in nearly every case, they come from a situation where they have to ask strangers for some kind of help.

Is there anything you can do for them? Of course there is. You can give them some money, or perhaps buy a cheap meal for them. You can listen to their stories—even just listening can help. Many beggars like to tell stories about themselves.

Some people will tell you to stay away from them. They might think that these beggars are trying to cheat people—they might be as healthy as you are and they might have expensive cars or large houses. Some even say that they work for some kind of criminal organization(犯罪集团)—they don't keep the money for themselves, but hand in to the organization. And unluckily, these people are sometimes right.

However, I think it's better to think more optimistically(乐观地). Will it really hurt to help them in some small way? You never know what they might have been through. In life, we mainly listen to our heads when we're trying to find out what we should do. But sometimes, it is just as important to listen to our hearts as well.
