In Guatemala(危地马拉), environmental workers have set up a steel fence(围栏) across the Las Vacas River to stop plastics and other pollution.
The Ocean Cleanup, a volunteer group based in the Netherlands, is leading the work on the dirty river near Guatemala City. The environmental group uses the special fence to get and remove pollution from the water. The aim is to stop the move of plastics and other trash before they enter the ocean.
The rainy season in Guatemala begins in May and lasts for about five months. Levels of pollution in the river increase during the rains and the trash moves farther and faster. The Ocean Cleanup is doing the job to stop much of the pollution with the fence. And it has caught much trash every day.
"What we are trying to do is help clean up," said Boyan Slat, director of The Ocean Cleanup. "We have never seen plastic pollution like this," he added. "The Las Vacas River carries about 20,000 tons of trash every year. "
The next problem is to clear out the trash from the fence. They are testing to try to find the best way to set up and use the fence well.
