The soil from the moon is very different from the soil on the Earth. Lunar soil has a lot of iron(铁),1 very few nutrients(营养物). Recently, scientists2 in growing plants in the soil that had come from the moon.
The scientists chose a plant3 "thale cress (拟南芥)" for their experiment.
This small Nowering weed ( 杂草 )plant can grow in very little soil. The scientists divided some lunar soil4 twelve small containers. They wet the soil with water 5 with nutrients and then planted the seeds.
After two days of watering, the scientists saw green growth in every container. They continued to6 the plants. Compared to "Earth plants", these "lunar plants" grew more 7 . Their roots didn't develop well, and some leaves 8 red.
According to the scientists, the plants were "stressed" by the poor lunar soil. Still they were 9 that the plants were able to grow at all. The experiment is an important 10 toward growing plants on the moon. Scientists are now studying changes in the DNA of these "lunar weeds". They may one day find out ways to help plants grow better in the lunar soil.
