All over the world, our oceans, lakes and rivers are full of trash. It's mainly caused by our own littering and improper trash disposal(处理). Some waterways in Europe face the same problem.
To draw people's attention to water pollution, Greenkayak, an environmental group, is letting travelers kayak(划皮划艇) for free on some of Europe's rivers and lakes—as long as they pick up the garbage they find along the way. Greenkayakers are provided with a life jacket, a trash picker and a container for garbage. And they don't need to be experienced kayakers or swimmers, as they won't need to make direct physical contact with the water.
Greenkayakers have collected nearly 24, 000 pounds of trash—including plastic bags, bottles and shoes—from European waterways since the program began in April, 2017.
"In Denmark, people like hanging out on rivers and eating pizza. But it is terrible to see trash moving around. " Peter Andersen, a Greenkayaker said. "Letting people enjoy free kayaking and clean rivers at the same time is really a great idea. "
Now the program provides free kayaking in cities throughout Germany, Ireland, Norway, and Denmark. If you want to enjoy the sport and play a part in saving the environment, you can sign up on Greenkayak's website.
