How To Take London Buses
How to pay for a bus ride
It's not possible to pay with cash and the driver doesn't sell tickets, so you need to take a travel card with you before you get on.
How to get off a bus
If you want to get off the bus, you have to press the bell. If it's silent, that probably means someone has pressed it. Just look for a ‘stopping' sign by one of the doors.
Good and bad manners on the bus
♢Standing up-For safety reasons you're not allowed to stand on the stairs.
♢Talking to the person next to you-There's nothing wrong with starting a conversation with someone but the British aren't quite comfortable doing so.
♢Asking the driver where to get off-It's okay to ask the driver a question when you get on, but do not do so while the bus is moving.
♢Getting off the bus-You should leave by the middle or back doors. Some drivers can be angry when you leave by the front door because it is only for people to get on.
♢Thanking the driver-Drivers don't expect it, but passengers can shout out a quick thank you when they get off. Or you can just raise your hand as you get off because they'll be watching you in the mirror.
