Living in a small community, Mrs. Meredith was a 1 woman and she spent lots of time visiting the poor.
One morning, Mrs. Meredith told her children about a family she had cared about for a long time. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, and their little boy. The wife couldn't go out to work 2 she had to take care of her husband. It was hard for the family to live on 3 own and they needed all kinds of help.
The little boy Bernard, who hoped to get some money to help his family, 4 Mrs. Meredith's heart very much.
"I wish you could see him," she said to her children—John, Harry, and Clara. "He is such a 5 to his mother. He wants to make money, but I don't see what he can do."
