The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their country (disappear) from Earth. Several times this year, the Pacific island nation has been flooded by sudden high tides when there was neither wind rain. "This never happened before," say the elders of Kiribati.
What is causing these terrible high tides? answer may well be the global warming. When fuels like oil and coal
(be) being burned, pollutants are released; these pollutants trap heat in the earth's atmosphere. Warmer temperatures cause water
(expand).
If the trend continues, many countries will suffer. Bangladesh, for example, might lose one-fifth of its land. The island nations of the Pacific, however, would face an even (bad) situation—they would be swallowed(淹没) by the sea.
The people of these nations are very upset about their future. The sea, which their economies have always been based, is(sudden) threatening their existence. They don't have money for expensive technological solutions. And they have no control over the pollutants, which are produced mainly by large
(industrialise) countries. What they can do is hope that these countries will take (step) to reduce pollution.
