We are one China In Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, there are many old streets with names like Nanjing Road and Guilin Road. They are the names of mainland (祖国) cities. Zheng Dingbang a Chinese architect (建筑师) named these streets. In 1945, after the surrender (投降) of Japan, Taiwan came back to China. People wanted to change the Japanese road names into Chinese names. In 1946, Zheng Dingbang went to work in Taiwan. He had an idea — why not name the roads after mainland cities? People in Taiwan could feel closer to the motherland this way. Zheng named the street according to (根据) the location (位置) of the cities on the mainland. This way, the map of Taipei would look like a mini (微型的) map of China. People in the mainland and Taiwan are family. We are one China. We will not part again. |
