Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries. Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins (来源) of the food. Perhaps there are apples from California, beef from Australia, or potatoes from Egypt. And you will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. But the decisions we make on what we eat can also make a difference to the world around us.
Starting to check your food miles is an important step to save the earth. The distance from farm to fork is so short that the food will be better for your health and the environment.
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market so the food didn't have to travel very far. The consumers (消费者) also did not travel very far, because they went to that local market to buy the food. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. We've been used to having foods from other places around the world. We buy tropical (热带的) fruits rather than those grown in our local areas.
When considering (考虑) food miles, we shouldn't just think about the exact number of miles. However, it causes a carbon footprint (碳足迹) about 50 times bigger than that of the much slower transportation of food by sea. So whenever you can, buy food from local farmers and eat fruits and vegetables in season.
