It was a cold, dry February afternoon in 2017. I was in my house with my children. Suddenly, a fire broke out in my autistic (患自闭症的) son's room. In a few minutes, the fire grew across the living room and then the whole house.
My children and I all ran away from the fire without physical hurt. However, we lost all our possessions (财产). We only have the clothes we're standing in. We didn't even have shoes on. I watched the fire go up through the roof (屋顶). We lost our home. We had nowhere to live.
Luckily, we had insurance (保险). But until we could get some money, we had to live with friends and use what other people gave us.
And the biggest difference was made to my children. My autistic son really had problems dealing with any changes. He couldn't even accept the fact of having to wear a new pair of shoes. But now we had to tell him that he would live in a new house and all his clothes and toys were lost in the fire. My youngest daughter had asthma (哮喘). Thankfully, the head teacher of her school came and brought her the medicine that she kept at school.
Thinking about what happened, I couldn't help but feel afraid. I felt lucky that my kids were all safe now. Everyone was so nice. People went out of their way to help, not just on the day the fire broke out, but also in the weeks afterwards. I really want to say thanks to every one of them. Their kindness is the thing that I would always keep in my mind.
